I got the demo yesterday and played with it for several hours and I think the game looks extremely promising so far. It's been a long time since we've had a city builder with a strong vision. The demo *is* very rough though, I had a lot of bugs and graphical problems such as extreme FPS drops and the camera spazzing out a bunch, but the core gameplay is really fun and I love how when you zoom out, the city looks like something you could see in real life. And then there are weird little details that just add depth like choosing church bell sounds or your crest design. They're small things but they just add a sense of thoroughness to make the game feel really complete. It's sort of how in Elden Ring since it's what I've been playing the most right now, there's just this massive level of detail that really adds to the feeling that what you got is a really refined and finished product that just keeps on giving because the more you play, the more stuff you find to like about it. I agree with Potato McWhiskey that this blows Farthest Frontier out of the water completely.

This game is giving me the feeling of the game that I wished banished would have been. I remember the main issue with that game was that you never exited the "survive phase" and despite growing a huge city, the gameplay loop was still always the same. There was no mid or late game something that this game is at least attempting to provide which is amazing
@Janecek185

i dont thing there is any ´´survive phase´´. In Banished you had the first years of food strungle and after you had to take care for other things like tools and cloth, in Manor people actualy dont use any tools and they dont have any health issue from absence of cloth (in demo). I saw some herbs so illness will be probably present, but i think that this game will be more about how much prosperous your village will be and sudden colapse wont be dat big issue. Banished has more food options in the start, hunt, gather, fish and uncertainty in numbers of these resources, Manor Lords simple gives you spawn with numbers.

Considering that I wrecked my sleep schedule playing this literal pre-alpha demo I think it’s safe to say that I’m already hooked. And so far I’ve only experienced one bug (which was a pair of oxen hauling logs got stuck blocking each other from leaving the storehouse) and one crash (which was only after the game had been running for at least 10 hours straight bc I had it on while working from home (and might just be my laptop getting mad at me and not the game itself)). So if this one dude can make a /pre-alpha/ demo more polished and less buggy than many AAA games are on /release/ then I anticipate great things from Manor Lords

Played manor lords for an hour or so last night, loving it. Very excited to see what the future holds. Hoping for an early access version so I can start playing and saving games. The open market functionality of this game has some interesting opportunities. Does it mean that we will get some high specialisation among some players? A tech tree that branches out quite far, but doesn’t really let you get everything could be a really interesting overlay, so do you specialise or generalise in the trade? What are your potential offsets for those decisions? Hmmmmmm… excited!

Been following this game sense basically day one idk how long ago that was feels like 5-7 years. Idk maybe 3? But sense day one. And I definitely say manor lords for what was playable was great. Now if all the other major parts we want are just as great. Or even decent. This will be one of the best city builder games I’ve played. And ever made I’d even go as far to say. If the battles aren’t just shit and actually matter and mean something and what not, not just strong hold mass build soldiers send win. Type stuff. But more total wAr at a much smaller scale obviously it’ll be amazing. And if we can take over territories, also I’d love walls towers fortifications and such. But the game is beautiful and for a demo it was good. I wish we could’ve saved it, bc I can only play for 30-45 mins at a time with my son around. So unfortunately I only Played it once and that was that I hate redoing things multiple times knowing I’ll Just get to the same spot and have to redo yet again 😂 but it’s amazing watching others play it is reward enough for me🎉

Spot on. I played for about an hour only but I can't say I was impressed, seemed pretty generic to me, like AoE. Looks great though. But as someone who went balls deep into the original 'The Settlers', this has a long way to go before even coming close to that. Also, the 'single person developer' has been, here and elsewhere, lauded - in my experience it just means the project is more likely going to end up as 'abandonware' - just saying, would like to be proved wrong in this case.

Its like , its taking what that game was and elevating it to the next level. This is why this game is 10 out of 10 so far. Its basically taking what is already a greate base and mordernizing it. Then the guy has to build the other 2 layers on top (Regions and combat).

ppl get hyped so easily these days. you realize that all the difficult game systems are missing? what you got there is a gamified editor. thats the easy part to build. the engine was already there, he bought most assets, and implemented a kinda basic system of placing and number shuffling (= basic economy). so, whats missing? AI. as if that ever was important for any game...but that single guy will pull it off, i'm sure. that AI then will handle other Lords convincingly, as we all know diplomacy in games is easy to pull off. but more so his AI will do combat well of course, because that was never a problem in any game with even 100s of devs on the job. listen...he did a good sales pitch, and i congratulate the guy. but NOW i seriously hope he gets picked up by a studio that will take this over and expand on it.

I think trade and the amount of food households can generate needs tweaking, or the army and research has to be a massive money sink. If you build into trade straight away, and ignore the tutorial, there is no survival anymore. By first winter, you could have 10 houses, most of them are upgraded with vegie garden, chickens and goats, and from then on, you have surplus of food all the time. You just have to sell pelt from the hunters. That all is required. Build one logging camp, 1+ hunters, then put all men into logging and hunting. once you got 14 logs, just keep building houses with your hunters, once the 7th house is up, just keep logging and building houses, while putting hunters back on the job, and build a trading post, sell the pelt get some hammers, and money to upgrade the houses. After this everything is just a walk in the park. But it feels so good to do it.;)) Oh, and the game needs the wine production chain as well! And fishing.;))

That the game is only made by one man is crazy to me. How so many huge companies make absolute trash games and one dude made a game feel more polished in its limited demo than most other games says a lot. The game runs buttery smooth and it looks gorgeous. One thing I love so much is that it is finally a medieval city builder that is not on some damn square grid type system. Roads can be curved and you can still add buildings dynamically that fits in with the road. It just enhances the immersion so much compared to the boring straight roads and square plots we see in so many city builder games. Combining this with an immersive battle and conquest system is to me a dream game coming true, and it is by far the most anticipated strategy game for me now.

Without watching the video and with playing the demo i will answer the question. YES it is, its everything the dev promised and more. the building aspect is better than all the strategy games combined in last 20 years. Its mind boggling that it took so long for this to happen and that its just one guy making all this possible. It´s probably not going to be the holy grail of strategy games, but you can feel the love and hard work that has been put into the game so far, compared to any other strategy were its literaly the same thing over and over without any significant creativity put into mechanics or anything new. Biggest problem with strategy games is the lack of interaction with the world, usualy is static, non destructible, the building is very limited, blocked by unpassable terrain and maps designed to limit you rather than let you explore and interact with it. And always there is only one main aspect in every strategy game that is focused on, always limited to "city building", or "real time battles" or managing a kingdom. Im 100% positive that these massive companies could make all that and make it great if they just werent focused on making a profit every year and instead let the devs do it. After all, if this single man can do it, why a full dev studio, with millions in funding and with sometimes hundreds of people cant?

The game undeniably has very solid foundations. But for now, I mean what the demo offered, is quite similar to other games like Banished (better imo but still). So it seems ML will stand out with al its future features like "diplomacy" and wars/battles, which makes it a lot closer to a games like Lords of the Realm and Total War. But, like you said, will those features be as good as the city builder? Can't wait to see. Probably not before end of 2023 and even 2024. Anywaym even if the "new features" suck, I'll still have a blast with the city building.

I played the demo for around 20h now and enjoyed it pretty much. The basic game mechanics work very well, building your town is fun and overall the game looks just amazing. BUT we still don't know if the mid- to late-game content can keep up the good first impression of the demo. Also, the demo still contains a lot of bugs: Sometimes the FPS rate drops for no reason, multiple times I had a bug were I couldn't click on any builds anymore and therefore couldn't see any details so I had to end the game, the placement of the manor building is really cluncky and buggy and makes a mess out of the road connection.. and so on. So there's still a lot of things that need to be fixed before the game can get a 10 out of 10 for me. But if the devs can fix all major bugs and polish the placement mechanics, Manor Lords could be a real game changer for the whole genre.

I See you were not using the idle villagers button. In my experience, its best to keep seasonal stuff on idle villagers only, so you dont have to assign your villagers manually. You can still do it to guarantee stuff gets done, but with farms being OP in the demo, it was not necessary. If this system wasnt there, seasonality would turn into a micromanagement nightmare as your cities scale up.
