Very helpful..thanks!We have a Manson Supreme on Brick House, and it’s just amazes me how little scope will still hold her...When we are getting ready to leave an anchor and don’t want so much stink and wetness in the chain Locker, we start shortening scope hours before take off. One too e scope on a nice windy day start her dragging but not much before that. Pretty amazing when you think about it! We are trying to rid ourselves of a CQR that does t hold well even with 7:1 scope...have to find one that will fit on the bow!

A friend of mine just bought a roll bar Rocna and I will test it soon. Sadly, I have no access to a Vulcan. I did write to Canada Metals (Rocna Parent Company) requesting a test anchor but I have not (yet?) received a response.

Great test and shows what I would expect: once set the Manson will outperform the Spade with its larger fluke area, though both do very well. Surprisingly, the Spade didn't seem to set any more quickly than the Manson. I currently have a Manson and like it but am changing to a Spade equipped boat. I don't think I'll bother to change ground tackle but, buying new, I would go for a Manson; cheaper and more effective.

Very nice video, with two of my short-listed anchors, thanks. Impressive to see that both anchors set very well and hold at much shorter scopes than would normally used for anchoring. Not a conclusive test of course, one set does not make for valid comparison between these two anchors. May I request one of your tests with the Rocna Vulcan, if possible?

I'm guessing these are your main go to anchors..... based on what I've been watching. We are very new to sailing and haven't spent over night on anchor yet.... after watching your videos, I am feeling more trusting of the idea of anchors... I just need to make sure I have a good one and do some reset tests with it myself. :D

Coast Life do yourself a favour mate and ever trust an anchor. If you can always set a drift alarm and if in doult bridle into the prevailing winds

It's an interesting review for academic purposes, but I would no more anchor at these low scopes than I would park a car on the side of an increasingly steep mountain to test the "ultimate holding power" of the parking brake. That said, these videos convinced me to by a SPADE.

To me it looks very important to get the correct length of chain and play enough rope out before applying reverse throttle to set the anchor

Hey Steve, I was thinking about this and you should set one of your short scope tests at 1.414 which is the square root of 2, meaning 45 degree pull which is about the worst case I'd be going for. Less than that tips the balance in favour of lifting and away from pulling sideways. Any scope beyond 1.414 that can be held is therefore black magic and should not be trusted :-D However I'd also be interested in the 60 and 30 numbers which lay either side of that. I guess those are 2:1 which you regularly do and 1.15 which is about what you did in this video. Okay, good work :-D Still, I'd love to see 1.414 as a standard part of your procedure as it's the tipping point between drag and lift. Please consider this and mention it in future. Cheers.

Fredio, If I had more time and money, I would test this and numerous other scopes, and rode combinations. As it is, I am completely swamped with other testing and life in general. Also, my back hurts. Perhaps someday in the future I can continue with extreme short scope testing. It is an interesting study. Cheers, Steve

@@flygoodwin Understood. I wasn't saying go out and retest them all. I was saying if/when you do a reducing scope test video (I think your most useful in the real world) then please include 1.414 as it's the mathematically perfect number for a worst case scenario :-) And ideally 2 and 1.15 as well as the longer scopes (2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, above that is useless to me except in an emergency extreme storm scenario). Just keep it in mind in future :-)

I would like to test a Delta anchor but none are available to me.

That shows if the anchor is set well it should never drag, and your in sand, Just think if hard mud would be hard to get it up. Are you going to do that with the delta? Vern
