Mantua is a Township and Villiage in Portage County, Ohio. The town was laid out in the 1840's as Mantua Station, a stop on the Cleveland and Mahoning Valley Railroad. It was incorporated as Mantua in 1898. Settlers arrived in Mantua Township in 1798. Mantua has a lot of great history, along with many historical buildings. The Township Town Hall was constructed in 1840, making it the oldest Disciples of Christ Church in Ohio. Former U.S. President James A. Garfield frequently preached there between 1855-1860 while serving as president of nearby Hiram College. Oliver and Rosetta Snow, home is another of the historic homes built in 1815 immigrated to Mantua from Becket Massachusetts, it is now a private residence. While I was downtown I came upon a live Nativity taking place. Which was a special experience since Christmas is around the corner. The town has a real sense of home town community, these little towns are gems.
