As a kid, the Minoan Civilization was one of the first ancient societies that I had ever learned about on my own. However, this narrative blew my mind, and now I'm questioning everything. Where can I learn about Evans's fabrication of the Minoan past??

I think it's still valid to consider Cretan accomplishment and sophistication in light of their 6-storey campus architecture, their colonies around the Eastern Mediteranean and their trade networks reaching as far as the Iberian peninsula and the North coast of the Black Sea. With such, they demonstrate to me (at least) that in certain regards, they were ahead of their contemporaries. Agreed that Evans put too much Evans into the frescoes though.

What a fascinating argument, I had never considered the archeology being interpreted by the sole person who discovers it

Because it's not entirely true. While the first to discover might give a first interpretation, as more is learned the narrative changes as it is supposed to. As an example while the frescos in knossos might be extremely fragmented, there are hundreds of other sites and dozens of other places on and around Crete with much more complete examples. The original and subsequent narratives should be challenged, but doesn't mean they are wrong or right, just the best we know at this time.

Hi there, first of all hats off to you. A really informative and well argued video. I've got one question for you. Didn't the Akrotiri digs, with their extremely well preserved artifacts, buildings and frescoes help rewrite in part the Minoans' history, detoxing it from the damaging Evans' influence? I guess they allowed archeologists and historians to obtain a more philologically reliable imagery and of what life was like in Minoan settlements. Am I wrong to assume that?

I actually like most of the fresco's, vases, etc of the 'Minoan' culture that are in such good condition that there isn't any interpretation as to what it is or what it looks like. I actually think that Evans also took care in what he commisioned to be restored/recreated. I think its human nature to want to finish things and see things completed (even though several frescoes and the palace of Knossos had 'modern interpretations') There are several other representations of Minoan women to substantiate the hairstyles and the pose ( as in the 3 Minoan ladies fresco) I think this video maybe tries to take a little too much credit away from Evans , though it does let it be known that some of what we see was never actually 'saw' by the Minoans.

The presenter is an anti white male, woke feminist. Perhaps, Bettany Hughes will be able to shut the foul mouth of the presenter.

If you want to search about Minoan, or should I say, ancient Cretan hairdressing there is this essay that I don't know where it was published but I ve seed some photographs used for it more than a decade ago. The archaeologist is Γιώτα - Μαρία Πλάτωνος and the title is Εικονιστικοί τύποι των Μινωιτών στην Κρητομυκηναϊκή τέχνη. It will blow your mind. Also, I hope you speak Greek, otherwise if you find it I can help you with the translation. cheers!

Hey! I've been obsessed with the Minoans for the past few weeks. Do you know where I can find more information about Arthur Evans? It's such an interesting topic. Also, thank you for the video; I think it's really important to question where our knowledge comes from.

Another point of interest is that east Crete is about 60 miles from the Nile/Egypt and consequently the Minoans were influenced by the pre-dynastic Egyptians. There are a number of archaeologists who are currently investigating this

Have you read Marija Gimbutas, who tracks the lineage of what was indeed a goddess worshiping culture from Minoa back as far as the paleolithic? Independently from Evans ofc

GOOD AFTERNOON! Thank you for this! I always take "facts" with a grain of salt. Or, in this case, a block of salt! Most everything needs to be questioned, to one degree or another. And in this case, I am so glad you have! Nothing is positive until time travel can go back and see these things made! Interpretations always leaves room for doubt and questions. Well Mycenean Greeks were influenced a lot by the ancient cretans. Mycenean art is documented a little bit better. And then Greeks of the iron age were certainly influenced by their Bronze age ancestors , so it does make sense that the Minoans started it all. Anyway archeology of the late 19th and early 20th century was like this. Not very scientific by modern standards. What Evans and Schlimman did wad not archeology but something else...
