@timandersonhorsetraining when I was a kid I heard someone say the more vertical the withers, the rougher the trot. The more slope the smoother the trot? Is that true? Also the horses I grew up on weren't fancy. Mostly quarter horses and Appaloosas. They were all fluent at neck reining. Did it used to be an elementary button but has been moved to a lower priority. Now I see western horses getting various buttons added, but they aren't fluent in neck reigning.

Thank you Tim for showing how to do this❤ Imo, those downward transitions are more often neglected in western training disciplines than English ones. Western types usually have a good stop from any gait, but sometimes it's a new thing for them to lope to trot. Whereas English disciplines rarely transition from canter to whoa. So they're much slower to stop, but easier to go from canter to trot.

Ranch classes are primarily transition classes.

How long do you work a horse that’s already conditioned ?
@timandersonhorsetraining

Depends on the horse and what you are working towards. A conditioned horse should either be building up or coming down. How long and what you do depends on where you are with that..

We’re not competing in anything right now my horses had foals last year and I don’t work them in the winter . They are up at night but are out during the day . They are in pretty good shape considering being off a year . Do I just start walking,trotting for about 30 minutes for about a week and gradually add other things and gradually work up to more things and then riding & add more time gradually? Hope that made sense I was trying to keep my question short .
