North-Eastern Maple or Northern Sugar Maple is a local wood that grows in North Carolina, so it’s a wood that is readily available. The colors are typically lighter with dark streaks in them. It’s an absolutely wonderful wood for flutes because of its vibration quality. Just like maple is used a lot for violin sides and backs, it can also be used for flutes. It’s more of a rare type of wood so it stands out to be different type of wood used for flutes. But that shouldn’t eliminate the reason to use it. It’s got full tone and medium in weight. If you’re looking for a unique flute that stands out, Maple is the way to go.
This flute is a Native American style Flute (NA Flute). This style of flute originates from the First Nations people of America. Caleb Byerly hand makes this from his shop in North Carolina, from start to finish, just as he does with all of my flutes and instruments.
The Native American style flute is a double chambered flute which means it is easy to play, just blow! It has 6 holes and it is tuned in the minor pentatonic scale. An extra leather strap is added for you to place over the 4th hole in case you’d like to play it like a 5-hole flute. The mouthpiece is made of maple to make it comfortable to blow.
