Great video, thanks. I'm doing one myself. What I would say is that you MUST remove all tension from the mainspring before you start. You obviously did. Second, you were lucky that you didn't chip your glass when it fell out. You could loop an elastic band around the 4 pillars, mid way down, in order to hold it all together before disassembly. Thanks again.

Thank you very much and sorry for the late comment. I did remove all the tension off the main spring before I started and I did this very carefully so I wouldn’t smash my thumb with the winding device. I too am glad that he didn’t chip any glass when it fell out. Next time I will put on elastic band around the pillars to keep the glass in place. Thanks again for watching my channel and thanks again for the nice comments

Thanks for this, J.D. Lots, if not most old clocks and some watches have tapered pins. They work like a Morse taper. They’re quick to insert or remove with only primitive tools. My 1760 Scottish tallcase clock and a nice little c. 1880 Japy both have pins.

Thank you. A useful video. Out of interest what holds the top glass in place?

There is no clips that hold the top glass in place. It’s kind of glued in place which is interesting. As back in the day they must’ve used wax.

That’s a very nice clock! I have a French carriage clock on my bench at the moment that looks just about like it. The “90 degree transfer wheel” is known as a contrate wheel. The easiest way to disassemble may be to remove the movement from the base, remove the hands (the minute hand with a hand remover with a pin in the center that pushes against the center arbor and the hour hand as you did it), remove the clock face, then the platform escapement. That may help for next time 😏👍

Hi JD I'm sorry to be picky but I hope no budding clock repairs have been watching this as the approach is completely wrong. The platform is always locked in by the contrate wheel. But it can easily be removed by just removing the face. The way you dismantled the clock with the platform in place put the platform at risk of damage and as the most expensive part in the clock could have made the clock completely US.
