In video 3 of the Mapping for Mature Bucks Series, I focus on the pre-rut and rut to show how to locate four types of compounding terrain features in hill country: connecting drainages, thermal hubs, wagon wheel or topographic hubs, and parallel ridge systems. CalTopo is used "zoomed out" helps you find these terrain features, and how to set up your map based on where hiking trails, roads, and other human traffic (pressure) may be found. These spots are good in the pre-rut when mature bucks are still in their core, late Summer areas when they begin to lay down rubs and scrapes along preferred travel routes. These spots also work during the rut when mature bucks start traveling long distances in search of receptive does. I demonstrate how I initially set up the map in one example to get you into an area of focus that is more manageable for both e-scouting and boots on the ground scouting.
