Some more rules goofs: At 8'38": the choose career card should be placed at the left above the ship board and there should be placed 3 figures on. At 15'40" Richard places the 3 figures on the card, but still has the card in his display instead of above the shipboard. At 28'28": Jean places it's first disc on the marketplace of Puerto Plata. Richard say's: "which is the first upgrade of his ship". The upgrades of Jeans ships are on the even spaces, so only when the second disc is removed Jean has his first upgrade. This is important for end game scoring: you compare the freed spaces with a yellow circle. Terminology is very important in this game. At 41'48" slip of the tongue: "that bonus does not exist because they are alle equal at the beginning of the game". The bonus is the VP or the 2 doubloons. The +3 combat points is a combat modifier. The modifier does not count because the nations are all equal, but he still can get the VP or doubloons. Again: terminology. At 48'40": Jean moves to Puerto Cabezas. Then Richard takes the quest tile from the city scroll. That's wrong. The quest at the city Puerto Cabezas is a city action and Jean ignores all city actions. Jean performs only city actions from his cards, so Jean should place a disc and move his explorer 2 spaces. At 54'10" Wrong Klingon subtitle. Jean gets points for freed spaces on his ship board and 1 point for each taken project card, in this case 0 + 0 VP. Not played automa cards gives him no points. (VP "corrected" by Richard at 59'20" but again wrong Klingon subtitle.) When the automa cards are shuffled, you place them next to YOU. When Jean takes a project card (didn't happen in this run-through), you place the project card NEXT TO THE AUTOMA BOARD. The last 2 rules are on page 16, scoring for cards next to the automa board on page 17.. At 1:04'12": wrong calculation of combat values. Richard uses influence of the players instead of noble ranks (red banners) of the players. So France has combat value 3 and Spain has combat value 4, thus Jean should fight for Spain. (The combat modifier does not apply because France and England are tied for the least cubes on the game board.) At 1:04'42" Richard places a French cube at Cartagena "because Jean goes for the weakest island first". No, Jean takes the lowest numbered city first, and if there are no free cities Jean takes the lowest numbered village.

Wow... I 'm getting huge amounts of "Sid Meier's Pirates!" vibes from this game (talking about the C64 version from the late 1980ies). Beginning with the title "Maracaibo", which brings back good memories of hours and hours spent in the digital Caribbean, this runthrough almost made me shiver with anticipation the longer I continued watching you unfold the game's rules. I could already see myself needing, CRAVING this game, running for the nearest store and ignoring that, at home, nobody would feel up to playing this complex a game. Until you said players only get to go around the rondel four times -- BAM, I was back on the floor again. I meanm this can't be right, can it? With all these goals and tracks to advance on players surely need more time, more chances to get where they want? At one point playing "Pirates!" back then having earned the rank of "Duke" or "Marquis" and lands connected to those titles in more than one nation, I felt that I wanted to go on playing, reaping the harvest of being a notorious successful pirate, take control of politics for these nations, build and manage a stronghold or something in the city where my game wife lived as the mayor's daughter, produce offspring and whatnot... But Sid Meier saw fit to make the game end whenever my digital pirate avatar had lived for so many years. Is it possible that "Maracaibo" will make me feel the same and end before I want it to? Since, as you said, everything is a race in this game, it probably WILL end too early for my taste. But it looks sooo promising! I need to get my eyes on more gameplay before I decide whether I buy it for its own value or for nostalgic reasons or maybe both. Unfortunately, you did not favor us with an "extended" video, but thank you, as always, Richard, for what you've shared!

Chri Scho I believe there are 20 places in the Rondel therefore a minimum of 3 turns are necessary per rotation or 12 per games. That’s the minimum, it could be substantially more if players crawl around the board. But as a minimum, 12 is pretty much in keeping with Euro style games.

Richard, I was just wondering whether you have stopped doing "Extended Runthrough" videos and if so, why? Also, it seems (maybe as a result of not doing the Extended videos - correct me if I am wrong) that your regular Runthrough videos have gotten longer to compensate. Would you agree with that statement? (For example, more than an hour on this video). I am not saying that you are doing it either the wrong way or the right way. It is your channel, so you should do what you feel is comfortable for you. These are just a few observations which I have made recently.
@rahdo
4 жыл бұрын
basically, one of the reasons i did separate main and extended videos was because i needed to give my brain a break instead of filming in one long take (it's very fatiguing trying to juggle multiple player strategies in my head while also making choices to demonstrate as much of the game as possible and be entertaining). now adays though, since i'm not filming freehanded anymore, i find it much easier to keep going in one take, so i'm more inclined to do that, because it means less work after the video is done filming. so before, this probably would have been a 25 minute runthrough followed by a 30-40 minute extended, but now it's all one hourlong video. roughly the same length in the end :)

Is it just me or was this runthrough a little difficult to follow? I think it would help if you added a quick overview of what the gameplay loop is at the beginning of the video. 15 min of setup and I still have no idea what we're doing in this game. Not a list of actions, just a minute long, back of the box type of description of what we do in the game.

Question: It seems like this would take a long time to set up, but that with only two people playing, the game could potentially only last like 30 minutes, given how fast you can complete one of only four rounds. Is the setup-time-to-play-time ratio proportionate?
@rahdo
4 жыл бұрын
the only bad bit about setup is the fact that you have to separate the A & B decks, shuffle separately, add 40 B cards to the A cards (or vice versa), and shuffle again. This is a royal pain if you're by yourself. But if there's one other person, then it's no big deal because they can do all the card stuff (it's a simple task) while you set everything else up. It's actually an ideal game for multiple people to help setup because multiple decks to shuffle and combine :)

You should check out Europa Universalis: The Price Of Power. You can go to war against France/Spain (Castille), whether it be on land or naval warfare (with ships) - in addition to many other countries. You can also take diplomatic actions, as well. It is a very historical, grand strategy game based on the Europa Universalis IV computer game (the grand campaign starts in 1444, but you do not have to play the entire grand campaign. You can play until after one of the Ages.) It was just on Kickstarter and you can still late back it: www.kickstarter.com/projects/aegirgames/europa-universalis-the-price-of-power/comments. Also, the EU computer game series was based on the original Europa Universalis board game released in 1993 (look it up, it is a grand, long time - comparable in playtime to Twilight Imperium, but with many choices of various scenarios). Please know that I am in no way affiliated with the sales or marketing of this game. I am just a gamer who thinks this game looks awesome and so I encourage you to check it out!
