I brought this exact receiver in to a McIntosh lab (in 1975) which was performing free tests at the time to see how a particular manufactures receiver or amp matched up to their specifications. The 4300 stereo rating was 100w/ch RMS and McIntosh found the Marantz actually put out an amazing 153/w per channel RMS into 8 ohms. A great amp at 8 ohms but found out I needed a dedicated power amp to drive down under 4 ohms for the special speakers I designed. I settled for a Kenwood M2A which can drive 2 ohm loads safely. If you stay at 8ohms this Marantz receiver is incredible. Yes you need to recap this Stereo but it is a labor of love as it is usually cost prohibitive unless you do it yourself and have the necessary equipment and knowledge. (stereo RF FM MPX generators, audio generators, VTVM and scope)

I bought a 4300 in Germany in 1975, still works perfectly and the tuner is incredible. To bad FM isnt like it was in the day. This is a very powerful amp and had Krell like control over the bass.

I grew up with the 4300. Would love to find another one. My parents bought it in 1975 in Germany.

Ah... a receiver with many user control features... I'm so sick of the limited homogenised offerings on so many receivers seen in the market today. I like big speakers too... wired for sound!

PS: "Quadradial" (virtual) is possible with even stereo sound, when the receiver is switched to 4 x 40 watts, front: mode switch to "vari-matrix", then you can "create" quadrophonic-like sound by turning the "dimension" potmeter. I had it set up like that before I moved over here and it does synthesize quadrophonic sound through phaseshift.. Pity you never tried that, because only THEN you'd experience what this receiver is capable of. It DOES truly make "surroundsound"

I only have 4 ohm speakers, I am always afraid to put 4 speakers of 4 ohm play together, most amps can't handle that

vintage stereo Doesn't matter in this case... The powersupply is "oversized", it WILL be stable when using 4 Ohm.. Quite simple: when providing sufficient current, there is no problem.. (Ohm's law) Wattage = P (power) = V (voltage) x I (current) only thing that goes up is outputwattage thus also temperature. marantz understood that, so the solution was simple: provide it with an incredible PSU and HUGE coolingblocks. (that's why it's so incredibly heavy in weight) Noticed the tag on the back of the 4300 and what it said? "650 watt" see pic--> i.imgur.com/wPwRRnS.jpg Besides... the marantz 4300 is overload protected in every way you can think off.. (4 relais)

GTI1dasOriginal He Anton, what do you think.... Could my sansui g-7000 handle 4 speakers from 4 ohm the same time? I am to afraid to try it out. Love the sansui to much to take any change to blew it up. I tried them with the sony es amplifier, that went good...but the sansui, love it too much to risk it.

vintage stereo Andrew, I took a look at the servicemanual, it seems your G7000 has 2 caps at the PSU(powersupply) section of 10.000 hF and the PSU itself can output a max of 470 VA (VoltAmpere), also it has a circuit that if resistance of a speaker is below a certain point, (thus the temperature would increase) it changes (lowers) the max current of the PSU, thus preventing overheating the poweramps.

GTI1dasOriginal Oh man, Thanks for this info, I learn so much from this comment...completely new for me what you just described here. I have a multimeter and will read them like you described. I never play my music hard, never over 5 stripes, I had a g7500 and on the back of that receiver they wrote that when you play less then 8 ohm's only one channel could be used. The thing is that I am not happy with one speaker. When I combine 2 speakers I have the total superb sound but never from one speaker.

Not in his posession anymore.. I know who it has right now (or it must have been sold already, don't know for sure) but it's been "upgraded" by a new (black, reproduction) faceplate and a (black?? not sure about that) woodcase. Here's a pic he send me when he was working on it: i.imgur.com/2QY1fJ4.jpg (click to open link) Emailadress available if interested, (I have no ties to that person nor are there any profits gained) PM me if you want that emailadress.

Andrew, that Samsung Phone must have had a prety low output... Why I say this: when you heard it at my place (playing Grace Jones from my PC) I had the receiver at the same volumelevel as you demonstrate Elton John.. You heard it back then and the volume was on the edge of complaining neighbours. Remember what I told you... I readjusted the complete poweramp section and it was measured at 2 x 135 Watt (20 Hz - 20 kHz@ typical THD) so, true wattage.

You are the first one who noticed it. But that is because you know this marantz. With all my other 4 ohm speakers who have a sensitivity from 90db and higher the volume knob can only be on 2/3 stripes. The tannoy 605 are high end and starting with 87 db, that's very low. These speakers are small but need a big amp. Thats why I use the marantz, because 100w is enough for these speakers. In the review from the speakers I explain that you can't drive these speakers with a 20 to 50 w amp, too small. Thanks for the input man. Do you still have the 5220?

GTI1dasOriginal I am surprised it took that long to sell it. People don't have money ore are just dreaming to find one for a few pennies.I never saw a mint 5220 like yours. The thing also sound very good what means the heads are still ok. What setup do you have now? You can lent a receiver from me in between time. I have here a akai aa-r30, I will made a review from it soon, did not tested it out yet but have the thing a few months in my house now. Maybe it sound nice on your imperial g7 speakers.
