@TreeMarieSoapworks

I already lowered the water amount. I have found that the soda ash forms on slab soaps because of the large amount of headspace. I made an insert to cut down on that and it has solved the problem. 👏

Icing the lye creates your temperature problems. A slab mold should easily gel, but your lye solution is too cold. I accidently raised my oils to 118 deg, but that's just what was needed to avoid SA in the summer here. My lye solution was prob 90-100 def (F). Peace and Health
@b.l.a.c.k-shiva

It's recommended that oils be heated up to 110-130 before use to avoid SA. 110 wasn't completely avoiding it for me

Spraying with isopropyl alcohol every 15 minutes for one hour helps soda ash, too, doesn't it? If 91% doesn't help, maybe you have to use the more expensive 99%. That's what helped me.
@TreeMarieSoapworks
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you; I don't use iso alcohol. In my opinion, soda ash is caused by humidity. A few things work for me: 1) Water discount: (I use 25% water as a percentage of oil weight). Yours at 30% should be fine. 2) I cover my soap. If you are worried about a high soap-top, make a spacer to go in between the mold and the cover. I use plexiglass that I purchased and had cut at the local hardware store. Then I cover that with plastic wrap. That way, you can see what is going on in there. 3) I over process my soap. Because of the water discount, the gel process happens quickly and often doesn't have the energy to get all the way through gel. Oven processing helps to avoid partial gel, and I believe it helps with the soda ash issue too. To oven process (CPOP, Cold Process Oven Process), I preheat the oven to the lowest temp. Actually, I only preheat for a short time (30 seconds to a minute). You are just trying to warm up the air in the oven. Put the covered soap in the oven and turn the oven OFF, and turn the oven light on to maintain the warmth. I turn the oven light off before I go to bed and remove the soap from the oven in the morning. 4) ***If it is humid, leave it covered for another day.*** (Important) Soda ash often develops after the cover is removed, but before saponification is complete. 5) Be careful that your batter is not too thin. Really thin trace can cause immense soda ash. 6) If you are using a slab mold (that is when I tend to get the most soda ash), make an insert to create less headspace. When I did this, it has solved the ash problems from making slab soaps.

Remember me? I've mentioned to you a while back about doing an experiment with 50% water discount. I do this all the time and never experienced soda ash since... I can't imagine ever going back to a higher water count. Pros w/ 50 % wd, curing time is cut in half about 3 weeks.. test it yourself? try out the pH levels after that amount of time and you'll see it's safe... but my suggestion is when soaping at such a steep level you have to be sure that you are soaping below room temperature.. I go as far as putting my lye solution in the freezer until cooled, because if you soap hotter then that you will reach Trace immediately... I would love to see you do a Experiment video on 50% wd😁👋
@gainedinthegarden3925
5 жыл бұрын
Oh gosh, I forgot to mention, soaping like this is nearly impossible to leave your soap in the mold for 48 hours or 24 hrs... I have left it longer than 7 hours maybe 9 and it was impossible for me to cut through it.. so I've unmold about 6 to 7 hours.. 🤣 you probably like "what is she crazy" lol. true story
@TreeMarieSoapworks

I do remember you. 😊 Are you able to do swirls with this steep of a water discount? By 50%, are you meaning equal parts water and lye? I am always making complicated designs. The batter has to remain fluid for a long time. I Do you think it would work with complicated designs?

I always use steamer on soda ash it always work. Just use steamer little longer almost to the point of soap melting. Also don't hold soap in your hand when steaming because you get fingerprints or glove marks on. You could get steam burn. I use BBQ skewers under the soap for steam to go around the soap bars evenly. Put a single napkin layer on your surface are under the skewers. Let the bars dry completely before you touch them. I have saved hundreds of my soap bars from soda ash and turned them into beautiful shiny bars.

Your videos are great help, and you are a perfectionist, congratulations for your work. Just one thing. In this recipe you say you use Molten Lava Neon Pigment at a rate of 1tsp per pound of oils and in the video you are using half tsp, 2,5ml spoon and your recipe is 17.5 oz (1 pound). Am I wrong?
@TreeMarieSoapworks
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but half the batter is black. Only figure your colorant for the amount or percentage of the oil weight (in this case) you are using. Set up a ratio: 1 tsp over 16 oz = X over half of 17.5 or 8.625 oz. Cross multiply and divide to figure out X. So, 1/16 = X/8.625, 1 x 8.625 = 8.625, then divide by 16, X = .53 tsp
