I agree, but I'm a bit wary of the fact that we heard the comments straight off, meaning a mic was obviously handy in the audience and in the correct area. Usually (in other shows) when the audience join in, it takes a while for the mic to get to him/her, and we miss the start of the audio, and that's in programmes where audience participation was planned! This, as it was supposed to seem, was ad-lib. Just a thought!

I was 13 or 14 when I bought "Electric Warrior" in 1971 and am now 60, and I STILL love that album. I went on to "Tanx" and "The Slider". Remember, Marc Bolan was a performer and every good performer has to have self-confidence and a certain amount of panache, which may come across as arrogance. Beneath it all, I believe that he was humble in an unusual way, if that makes any sense. If you watch him perform, he’s often on the verge of laughter, especially when he looks at his bandmates, and will purse his lips or bite them to keep from laughing. Conceited people don’t laugh at the absurdity of fame, as he did. God rest his precious soul.

Great interview. They don't do interviews like this anymore. They overly praise people in the spotlight, now. But, in this interview, we get to know Marc Bolan and see his body moving, hear his voice, watch him talk and react, see his eyes and hit teeth, we can see his real persona, and his beautiful wild hair. That interviewer, Russel Harty was a man of my father's age, same suits, same hair style, and he tried to provoke Marc with some of the things he said. Marc was too wise for all that. This was a rare find. Thank you so much. Love that Marc Bolan. Gone too young!

This is probably the best Bolan interview I've seen. It's very surprising to me how people perceive a clip in totally different ways. I did not see the interview guy as rude or condescending at all, nor did I see them vying for space or screen time. At that time Bolan had been a major star for a while. You are supposed to carry yourself with at least some flair. I liked his answers a lot; they were humble and well thought out. He had been a model, so he knew about posing. You can't really fault him for that. I mean, look at Michael and Prince years later, and then all those desperate kids on the TV shows nowadays doing cartwheels, screaming, belittling themselves for some little 15 minutes of approval. The reason many of the 70's artists still resonate today ( I mean here we are in '20 talking about Bolan) is because they started from a foundation of conviction. Like Bolan said here he saw himself as a poet at core.
@KickflipGnasty
2 жыл бұрын
Nah he definitely was condescending. He makes weird assumptions about how Marc handles money and his business. And asking him if he felt privileged for it, and Marc wasn’t having it. I don’t blame him, that was a can of worms for the interviewer to open and it didn’t get him very far. From that point on Marc completely dominated him in the interview.
@acw7120
2 жыл бұрын
Harty doesn't come across as anyone who shows the slightest interest in Marc's music or poetry, proving it by only questioning him about his "privileged life" or how many cars he has. He then even questions if he should have all those cars at all, almost like he is trying to make him feel guilty for owning them because it can lead to "other people being envious". By asking that, it sounds like he is envious himself otherwise why ask it? They are there to talk about music and Marc's work yet he is more interested in Marc's possessions. He mentions envy, privilege and money all the time, completing bypassing what Marc is trying to explain about his daily life and what music and its practical production involves once you get "known". What Marc was explaining as a "hassle", Harty viewed as a "privilege". Music is loud. It is only natural that musicians end up with a bigger house. That's why Steve Marriott yelled out the "lazy Sunday" song with the Small Faces, as it was about people banging on the wall all day long as the drums were too loud in a tiny house with thin walls. "Wouldn't it be nice to get on with me neighbours". Harty shows no interest in music or Marc as a person in this interview, let alone his musical daily life or why there are people around him. Harty appears to come across as condescending and not very friendly in this interview, whether it is intentional or not.

When I was a kid in the seventies he was such a mega star to me. Seeing this for the first time I realise he was so much more. Such a down to earth deep sweet person who loved and believed in what he did. Cruel world.

Just listened to my 1st T-Rex LP today after having purchased it yesterday. Of course I've always known of Marc Bolan, and the songs that people have covered, but I'm just getting around to actually hearing him now. After listening to "The Slider" all the way through, I am now completely obsessed with the man. As a result, I am currently in the process of buying-up everything that he managed to put out in the small time given to him. This interview illustrates how real, and uncompromising he was, which is something that all the music heroes I've known and loved hold in common. As a side note: I find that he was an incredibly beautiful man. If I was a woman I would've loved him just for his looks alone, but thankfully he so much more. Thank you!

Beware the endless compilations and 'unreleased gems'. All his studio albums from My People Were Fair in 1968 to Tanx in 1973 are worth getting. Found any favourites since you posted? Happy listening, Robert.

Marc Bolan was a natural artist and very creative musician, and you can see in this interview alone he was also a smart, sensitive, and interesting person. Too bad he died so young, but thankfully his awesome music lives on.

Astonishing. Such an intelligent, charismatic and engaging man. Gifted, beautiful, of his time and still musically relevant moving forward. Good to see a superstar alert and normal, as opposed to out of it on drink or drugs.

Love that Bolan was getting the studio audience involved. He was quite witty, intelligent and articulate. It was a bit disturbing to see his face when he stated that he didn't expect to live very long though.

He was my mam's favourite artist. I was born in 82 and grew up in the 90's. I really loved his music, I loved 80's music and 90's but there was something about him. My mam bought me his tape. It's now 2023, I still listen to TRex now💖 he was ahead of his time. I feel that many now could still take a lot from his music

I've come across this interview before, and it makes me sad when I hear him say he doesn't think he'll live that long. What makes it sad is than he's been dead longer than he's been alive and what a burden it must've been to carry knowing this. I wish things could've been different and he could've hung around longer. Who knows what he could've done. Another sad thing is that we'll never know.

It's a life diminishing event when someone like this is snatched from existence. One has to mourn the loss not only of the individual, but the selfish pleasure of the creativity cut short - the wonderful content you will never hear.

He had that effect on a lot of young guys - as Morrisey did on the next generation. Bono said of Marc ' he crept up and grabbed you by the balls'. Thank God the world's a lot more interesting than just straight or gay! ' In the head of a man is a woman / in the head of a woman is a man / but what wonders roam in the head of a child?' - poem on Bolan's Prophets, Seers & Sages album.

Marc Bolan was a real pioneer. He was a smart guy and had a really good, healthy attitude and perspective about the music industry. I believe had he lived on he would’ve been constantly reinventing himself and putting out stuff that was always relevant. I’m thinking he would have been huge in the industry...like Michael Jackson or Paul McCartney huge. Gone way too soon.
