Enrico Caruso made his Metropolitan Opera debut in Verdi’s “Rigoletto.” According to the author of “Caruso”, Howard Greenfeld, the Met audience did not warm up to Caruso right away in his debut performance. The audience started to warm up after the famous aria “La Donna e mobile”, but the reception of Caruso’s Met debut was not an ovation according to Mr. Greenfeld and other sources. Soprano Marcella Sembrich and baritone Antonio Scotti were Caruso’s partners in his debut performance. Caruso was partnered with both Sembrich and Scotti in many performances, and they were also very good friends.
For the subtitles, I have covered every characters lines once. There is a lot of repeated text. I did not want to stack everything on top of each other when they are all singing at the same time.
