During the Second World War, the Special Air Service Brigade was created. It was formed of the 1st and 2nd SAS (British), the 3rd and 4th SAS (French) and the 5th SAS (Belgian). The 5th SAS, under the command of Lt-Colonel Eddy Blondeel, is responsible for the arrest of Joachim Von Ribbentrop and Admiral Karl Doenitz. They were the first unit in Belgian and in Germany and were involved in the Battles of Normandy and Belgium, the Battle of the Bulge (to name a few). In 1945, Blondeel asked Pierre Leemans to create a march for the regiment (according to the legend "during one single night"). The marche was first officially played on the Grand-Place of Brussels, on May 8, 1946, and was officially adopted by the Belgian Parachutists on September 9, 1946. The march was later adopted by the British SAS as regimental march.

It's written by Pierre Leemans, a Belgian composer who also wrote the march of the 1935 World Exhibition of Brussels. The SAS apparantly also plays it, but it really is a Belgian composition. So we don't just beat you English with the soccer game :)
@johnsalt1157

Ben Q -- By one letter only. SAS quick march is "La marche des parachutistes Belges"; Parachute Regiment quick march is "Ride of the valkyries". Benoit -- Nobody is suggesting that this a British composition. That it is the SAS quick march is intended as a compliment to their Belgian comrades-in-arms. British regiments get their quick marches from a strange variety of places: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_marches_of_the_British_Armed_Forces

Paratroopers were only formed in the 20th century. Belgian paratroopers were influenced by the SAS and the American parachutists, and received their trial by fire in conflicts in the Congo. It would make sense that such a "rough and ready" unit would march faster than a typical European unit.
@Retroscoop

Which is strange because the Legion marches at almost a leisurely walk to their regimental song, "Le Boudin". This has a nice, cheerful sound, as does the song already mentioned.
@MrAbbott134
11 жыл бұрын
actually, this is a march for a European Military.. Have you seen the way they march? It takes time, therefore, their marches are typically slower than say the average American march piece simply because we march fast. So funconductor is right in saying that the tempo is a wee bit fast for the piece at hand..
@225byakuya

I have to play this at band, at 120 tempo. My conductor says when he conducted the band for march people to cadence to, they couldn't keep up with the tempo! I play French Horn, and lots of the march pieces they give me are boring. I gotta learn to play on up-beats though.
