I think part of the reason this show 'failed' to meet expectations is that a lot of people expected it to be a pseudo-documentary instead of the historical drama/retelling that it is. Which is kinda weird because "The Great" instead became popular for that same reason. I love both tho. There's always room for historical fiction in my watchlist.
@noahbrown6970
10 ай бұрын
I feel like The Great got more of a pass cause it was partly comedic and almost cartoonish in the way it bent the history (the language and slang, some of the music choices, etc.), whereas Marco Polo was still a through-and-through drama/adventure. Don't get me wrong, its still a great show, like you said its a good bit of historical fiction. But it unfortunately did carry itself as that pseudo-documentary people were expecting sometimes (the Netflix marketing team didn't particularly help matters either tbh, like cutting a marathon runner's big toe off as he's lining up hahaha)

I guess it's fitting because Rustichello's account of Marco Polo's journeys is itself a drama pretending to be a documentary. I think the 1982 American-Italian version (with every actor you can think of in it) captures the spirit of the story a lot better than this one, though.

@@The_Daily_Tomato Having watched it twice, definantly season 2. Theres only 2 seasons, but the show becomes agonizly slow and meandering in season 2, which is bad considering season 1 had its pacing issues. Season 1 has that honey moon period of getting lost in the world of mongolia and china, which is always interesting and you really feel like an ant watching this. I'd give it a go for the scope of the world, you can see netflix threw its budget behind the show in its shot composition, costumes and overall style, prob trying to compete with Game of Thrones, since the era of 2013-2014, every show was trying to have this raunchy period show, like Amazons Black Sails. Im assuming too, the return just wasnt that great for its scope. Every now and again I skim through the show for all Kublai Khan and Jia Sidhao scenes, Benedict wong and Chin Hao nail their scenes. @@ChromeMan04 The fear was well-founded, though. The Mongol Empire was basically the medieval blitzkrieg in practice - incredible mobility with the tanks of the medieval world, cavalry. Mobility has been a massive advantage in any battlefield - air power dominates the modern world not because aircraft are any more powerful than a land army, but because they can strike anywhere before you can retaliate. And the Mongols exploited that expertly. They may have trouble taking well-fortified positions, but they have plenty of options even then. A city could be defended well enough but it can be starved and whittled down, torn apart by trebuchet or cannon. Supplies are easy to cut off when your army can go twice as fast as any other. Of course, they weren't invincible, and you could absolutely rout their army if you were dug in enough. But you can shoot down aircraft too, and that still doesn't make it any less terrifying to deal with.

It's a weak argument. The 'Great Wall' was built to keep out northern Mongolian invaders, the exact same group that was in power during Polo's time there, who controlled territories on either side of the wall and would've had no reason for a barrier. Plus the "Great Wall of China" (the one most people are familiar with) was built during the Ming dynasty, about 200 years after Polo's time. There were other "great walls" that date earlier, but no reason to suspect any of them would've been up in the mid -late 13th Century.

Literally the only decent show Netflix ever produced and they canceled it after two seasons. So Glad I canceled My subscription to them years ago.

Why are they displaying khan as some weak leader that doesn’t know what to do unless his wife tells him what to do?

In nomadic societies, wives of khans had more upfront role in their behaviour, which is a thing with all nomadic societies. It's not about being weak or anything, the khan doesn't have important feudal lords, many relatives around him, so his close family would have a great effect on him

Kublai Khan was not like any other Khan before him. I'd argue he was the most just Khan, and smart af too.

in the west = getting advice from your women means being a weak leader. in the east = women are a supportive pillar for their husband and carry almost equal power. unfortuntely the west is too blinded too see that, but history is recorded and shows very well that women had more rights and were more respected in the east than in the west. yesterday, today and tomorrow. its a cultural thing for steppe nomads.

Netflix is very good at filming Western historical themes, such as Rome, Vikings... As an East Asian viewer, this drama is absurd and wrong in terms of aesthetics, culture, and historical facts. No one understands this history and East Asian aesthetics better than East Asian viewers.

This show was so good when it stuck to history. It was crippled by the historical inaccuracies and season 2 was just fantasy. Perhaps it would have lasted longer if it was historically accurate, the real history of Kublai Khans reign is far more interesting than the ridiculous crusader plot, for the example.

Mongol version of Asiatic Shamanism. I'm not familiar with Mongolic Mythology but the Sky God in Turkic Shamanism(Which is hardly different than Mongolic one) is called Ülgen. He was customly called Gök Tingri, Sky God. A lot of western scholars, actually mistake that Sky itself was a god for mongols so he says Blue Sky in the show. The chief gods of shamanistic nomads were Ülgen, Umay, Erlik, Öd, Yol, Yel etc. It's not static and these deities had different names in different eras.
