While I disagree with his views on marriage, I can't say I disagree with him on leaving it up to state government to decide on this issue. I do not think the government should have a conclusive say on who can get married and who cannot- that's a step too far on the federal level.

If you do not believe that the government should say who should marry who, then why would you be for states deciding that? If the government doesn't request that STRICTLY opposite gender is a requirement for a marriage certificate, then I think we have reached morality at our time and age. Being that this is the 21st century. Is that too much to ask? They still have rules on it, they aren't completely uninvolved to say the least, and people won't feel forced upon by the government.

Kendra Martin Speaking purely in a government sense with respect to the US, it is far more fair. A sweeping legislative decision on the federal level about who can do what just seems like too much power in one place. However- since I made this post I realize now that the 14th amendment was examined and it was an absolutely necessary examination. That being said, it was just a point of view in terms of big government. And the argument itself pokes holes in the concept of what is fair and reasonable and who gets to decide that with the current method

Haven't we learned from history that basic human rights are not state issues? Rubio is the candidate of yesterday, or even two centuries ago. States rights! Yeah right. That just means people at local level can oppress minorities, and that's all it's ever meant.

I know. 50 years ago people couldn't see blacks as worthy of having equal rights as whites, and during the 1850s people said that slaves didn't have the same right as normal humans. If you disagreed, it was claimed, the legal argument should be left to the state. Today, even if you disagree about the status of gays, since gays are arguing that the right to marry whom one wants is a fundamental human right, it seems like this is not a state issue, but an issue to be taken up at the federal level. On a more human level, no one chooses to be homosexual.Being homesexual is part of the innate nature and identity of a minority of individuals in our society. I would hope you have more compassion in your soul than to compare it to bestiality. If you think this way, you either don't know any gay people personally, or you are suppressing this tendecy in yourself (or perhaps both). Interestingly, the places in our country with the strongest opposition to gay marriage are the same places that opposed Civil Rights for blacks just awhile back. The history of the United States has been a slow and painful extension of human rights from allowing all male citizens to vote (regardless of their social status) to ending slavery, to giving women the right to vote, to extending and securing civil rights to all people, to guaranteeing equal protection under the law. Today this entails giving each individual the right to marry whom he or she wants. It's interesting you mention bestiality because in the future society will make important decisions about the moral and legal status of animals. My guess is that bestiality will never be permitted in society, legally or morally, but not because it's gross and icky, but because it is violation of animals and is a form of animal cruelty. It involves a perversion just like statutory rape because one party involved can never be fully consentual. As far polygamy goes, it historically has not involved two equal partners, but usually involves one party (almost always a man) treating the other parties as property or as having a lower status. Until we understand more about the nature of polygamy, it seems safe to say the polygamy will not work as a social practice in a society that sees all human adults as having equal status under the law. Whatever we ultimately decide on polygamy, it should be in a direction consistent with a scientific understanding of human nature and a basic concern for human rights. Therefore the issue of bestiality and polygamy are not analogous to the issue of two homosexuals having the right to marry the person they love.

I already answered your objections. Yes, I am comparing skin color to sexual orientation. The overwhelming number of biologists and psychologist would agree me with in claiming that sexual orientation is not a choice, so to assert I don't know what I'm talking about, is just that, an assertion. Since I have demonstrated a clear distinction between a homosexual relationship and polygamy and bestiality, the burden of proof is on you to show they are in a moral sense the same. To recap from above (I feel you really didn't read what I put , just glanced over it) bestiality involves animal cruelty and is akin to statutory rape in that one party cannot be duly consensual, and polygamy involves an equal partnership between a dominant party and two or more)) submissive parties (at least this is how polygamy has been traditionally practiced. Polygamy also suffers from the practical impossibility of three parties attempting something that it is very difficult for two people of equal status to do, sustain a romantic relationship. So bestiality is a form of animal cruelty and polygamy can be objected to on both moral and practical grounds. So unless you can demonstrate that gay marriage is akin to bestiality or polygamy, I wonder why you wish to prevent two consenting adults from entering into a marriage as an expression of their love for each other. The science and the ethics or on my side, so can you provide any evidence for your position besides just saying you disagree with me? I would like to thank you in advance for not being a troll and maintaining a respectful tone.

Civil rights shouldn't been decided on the state level. It didn't happen with slavery, segregation, interracial marriage, and it shouldn't be decided with LGBT issues either. People don't choose to be gay either more than they can choose their height, eye color and hair color. I support presidents who recognize the diversity of this country, and not someone who only prefers people who are the most similar to themselves.

Marco, the courts aren't changing the laws. They're striking down illegal laws. It was never legal to ban same-sex marriage. It doesn't matter whether the legislature wrote that law, or a state's voters wrote it into their constitution. The USA is a country of laws, and the supreme law of the land is the US Constitution, and the 14th Amendment of that Constitution doesn't say there must be same-sex marriage, but it does say that if you want to ban it, to treat a minority like gay people less than straight people, you have to have a compelling reason and prove it in court. No such reason exists. Therefore the law is illegal.

I really like his poise and ability at answering the questions thoughfully, although I believe gay marriage is in fact a federal issue, that has also already been passed, and there is no way that he will change it back. I think the most important point was bringing all Americans to economic prosperity, since we can deal with the social issues on our own, states rights like he said, but if we don't have the economics down pat, we won't have the luxury of debating social problems.

You find it weird how a 15 year old girl would marry a 30 year old man back in the 1500s but its cool to marry the same sex today? At least it isnt same sex and wont spread STDs. And incest is how we're even here. You wouldnt be here without incest. Homosexuality got us nowhere. Just special treatment for those with a mental illness and those who speak out are automatically bigots and haters. For example marco rubio, never said he hated gays, but is still called a bigot because he simply disagrees with people's lifesyles. He still loves the person, just not the lifestyle
