I had to listen to this twice. The organist is not over performing the singer, contrarily, he is using the organ to reverberate her voice. Think of it as if her mic line is being routed through the organ and the sound from the organ is her voice with a slightly gained delay effect. He is talented and skilled enough to play her vocal runs verbatim. He is putting in some work!

Really? Reverberate her voice is nonsense and there is nothing such thing in music theory. Your statement is comical but proves my point. People are so focused on the organ that it takes away from the soloist. Any seasoned musician knows better. Music is not about YOU(musician). It's about accompanying the lead. You do know who the lead is right? The choir or in this case the soloist. It should never over shadow them. In this case he clearly does.

I remember seeing this on Facebook a few months back. I really had no issue with the organist. C.O.G.I.C church musicians are some the best for a reason. We can always give our opinion but if the soloist didn't have an issue with it let it be. We don't if they know each other rehearsed it that way or what not. The organist and the soloist BOTH blessed my soul with this arrangement and that's what I can appreciate.

+ARCODEMUSIC There has to be a line that can be crossed when a musician accompanies a singer regardless as to whether or not he/she is "fine" with it. Even the untrained ear can tell that this sounds wrong. It sounds like noise, conflict, and distraction at many different parts and that's a fact

The Learner what i have learned is every denomination has their own way of doing things. I agree with you there is line, but some people will push boundries and some will play it straight. You or me may play it straight or take something taken from this clip and retool it to make it a little smoother, but you have to give him credit for artistic expressions. Gospel music is the art form it is becuase you will never hear it the same way twice.

There are plenty of good musicians out there. The difference between the ones that get good gigs is about how you accompany other musicians and/or leaders around you. As a musician it's never a ME show. In this case this should have been about the soloist. No doubt he can play but he is not playing very maturely with this soloist.

This song is usually sung with a group of backup singers and it would have sounded pretty empty had the organist played it normally. Furthermore before the chorus, she soloed it without drums giving the organ player more room. You can tell he was playing the chorus to a tee everytime he came back to the 5 almost as if you can imagine a choir themself backing her up. This is master level and Marcus slayed this song!

The individuals making negative comments should be ashamed of themselves and need to study 1 Cor. 13:1-13! This passage of scripture should ALWAYS be the guide and restraint to our words about others! The purpose of COGIC AIM is to win lost souls to Christ! It isn't about what anyone likes or dislikes! The last time I checked this is about God getting the glory and honor so it isn't about you anyway! This is NOT a stage production, performance or play! I hope the Spirit of God weighs heavily on some of you and you ask God for his forgiveness! As a Prophet of God I have been charged to speak out and address such behavior that is displeasing in the eyes of God! I would also advise such individuals to keep the right attitude concerning this post! REMEMBER! children! God sees all and knows all! God bless and be blessed!

The relationship between the gospel singer and accompanist has vastly changed in the last 30 years. Nowadays it is often the accompanist assuming the role of lead voice, sometimes passively but most often aggressively. This video is just one of many examples. I like to call it the 'Gospel Chops' phenomenon. The singer and organist are tremendously gifted though...

Sometimes when it's clear the player isn't hip to the piece, he over compensates with tricks and thick progressions. This is why we as players has to stay current with all eras of gospel music. Phat chords are great but sometimes just play the piece as it's written is just as great. That said, this young man has an awesome talent but savvy comes with maturity. He will be fun to listen to in the future!

It would seem to me we’re not getting an accurate assessment of what the true mix is like. The person holding the video camera is standing 4 feet away from the Leslie and about 25 feet away from the singer. If it were the other way around, we’d probably say the organ was a bit low in the mix.

If you disagree with me i would question your method and mentality of complimenting and improvising behind a soloist... First of all he should not be running when she is running! Just like guitarist would not run at the same time as a sax player! Also his embelishments took away from the singers ability to be organic... She struggled many times to keep up with him... Its like she was following him instead of him following her!!!! Hes really good but i couldnt sense the soloist full anointing because she was fighting to keep up...

Dude can play for sure. But he loses the whole melody of the song by all the chord movements. Can't musicians just flow within the melody of the song rather than showing off. "Let's see how many chords can I put in the middle of the solo"....really? When there is a soloist, that's who should be highlighted not the musician. And seasoned musicians know this. It good to put your own flavor in certain spots but not the whole darn song. I had to turn it off midway through. He totally took away from the song. These young musicians need to learn that every song is not an organ solo. It sounds like a soloist just making runs with their voice on almost every note. TOOOOOOOOOO MUCH.

@tawtam1

It's not about bashing. These younger musicians need to learn from the older generation. They are better players as far as what they can do. Mature musicians know to back off when you have a choir and/or a soloist. It's not about you but the song that is being sung. If what you are doing on the keys is over shadowing the song the is being sung then the whole song is missed because everyone is just listening to you. When you post on youtube you are subject to criticism. Some good and some bad. What I am not trying to bash this young man rather you know him or not. Hopeful, he knows how to decipher the difference and learn from others that are more seasoned. Just because you can play well doesn't mean you are seasoned as a musician. Too many young people think it is more important to show out, do all of these runs that really not blessing God but glorifying themselves because they just want to be seen. Even some of these guys that play solo's lose the whole substance of the song because you really don't know where they are. Some of those old school musicians like Twinky knew what to play and how much and it always flowed with a soloist or a choir. My point is when you play in church God should be shining not you trying to out shine him. It's alright to add flavor to as long as it doesn't over shadow the vocals and that's exactly what he did in this video.

+oran snelling I agree. The boy is bad! But yeah there were some spots he over killed as to backing her up. He went into that serious DM6 at the beginning, a chord I already knew but when I heard it, it still blew me away! So see right there it took all my attention away from her and it would have done the same thing if I was sitting right there. Rev James Cleveland told me back in the day that He didn't like the new younger keyboardist because of this very same thing of them always 'showboating' instead of playing a song straight when backing someone up on keys. ...but these days this boy knows he would be considered a boring keyboard player if he didn't have a chord contest for the guys sitting around ..so we're stuck with this terrible mindset now. lol ...and many times I've done the samething when I knew other musicians were sitting around at conventions and councils ...listening to me. lol
@SynSynVelli
8 жыл бұрын
Ezra Bufford i feel what you are saying but in his specific case..from seeing him play ...i don't feel he is trying to showboat....that's his individual style of playing...he's a very humble dude...even with the fact of being a young master ..this guy is seriously a problem...if playing for the kingdom was a competition lol..but i have seen in other videos and on periscope...where he has taken a song and ministered and flowed...but i do agree with what you are saying about newer musicians in general.
