Traditional Lithuanian Easter Eggs - Margučiai
For the blue dye
1 Red cabbage
1litre of water
1tablespoon salt
1tablespoon vinegar
Shred cabbage, add the water, vinegar and salt and simmer for 30mins. Drain and let cool completely.
For the red dye
3-4 beetroot
1litre of water
1tablespoon salt
1tablespoon vinegar
Chop the beetroot, add the water, vinegar and salt and simmer for 30mins. Drain and let cool completely.
For the yellow dye
1 litre of water
1tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon vinegar
5-6 tablespoons of turmeric powder
Heat the water, vinegar and salt, add the turmeric and simmer for 30 mins. Drain over a cheesecloth and let cool completely.
Egg Painting Tips
Always use fresh, light coloured shell eggs. Wash them with baking soda before boiling, to remove a layer of fat from the shell, to allow the dye to properly penetrate the shell.
Use an upside down iron (my grandma used to put the iron in a big pot and turn it on) and the metal tea light casing for the wax. Or do as i did, and put the casing onto an essential oil burner.
Make sure the eggs are warm to the touch and not too cold as if the eggs are to hot the wax will just run all over the egg and if it’s too cold the lines will be very thin and short.
Make sure the nail you are using is also hot so wax doesn’t harden by the time you got it to the egg. That’s easily done by just holding the nail to the bottom of of the metal casing.
