I was there at Madison Square Garden for this match. It took place on Nov. 22, 1987 and preceded the Virginia Slims Championships final match between Steffi Graf and Gabriela Sabatini. Evonne Goolagong is my favorite female player and it was the first time I saw her in person. (I saw her one other time at a Legends match in Nashville, TN.)

Would love to see all of this match, even as an exhibition. Difficult to find much video of Bueno in her prime.

True champs Gary displaying best tennis. Evonne was something special; I will never forget the week I visited Wimbledon 1973... women brought the light to AELTC vs men´s Boycot.

It don’t know; it has to be early 80’s, around 1982/1983, if we take a look how EG is looking. Tennis Queens all together.

Judging from the look of Evonne's children I'd date this around 1989/1990. Kelly was born in 1977 and Morgan in 1981 and look to be around 12 and 8 respectively. I so wish there was far more film of Goolagong lighting up the court with her artistry and genius.

MrPatry101 It seems you know those details about her life much better than me. She was so good tennis player, I love how she serve and approach the net; I saw her in 1973 and I will never forget. Take a look to this movie; she plays with such grace... she is my tennis Queen. kzitem.info/news/bejne/sJWPnaNnj2eFhJg

I had the pleasure to see her many times I worked at Wimbledon in late 70/early 80 lsaw her win in 80 .. she played such beautiful tennis that day! She also really lovely to talk to she gave us sweets and drinks when I was a court covered ! She was very humble and kind hearted.. A joy Chris Evert who everyone thinks is wonderful was aloof and condescending and very fond of herself I did not take to her! Evonne everyone loved her Martina has said she’s the nicest person she’s ever met! I could see why ! That beautiful effortless elegance true original..! She’s getting a lot of awards these days for her charity work Thanks got the reply

cathy smyth Ohhh dear... you are describing with passion the tennis player I loved most, the Australian Queen...Evonne. I can remind how she enjoyed playing mixed doubles with Ilie Nastase... I can still today remind laughs on court. Thank you so much Cathy for this open comments and personal descriptions about what you experienced; they are, all, a tennis gem for fans. Thanks

Vincent my pleasure .i have often thought Evonne never got the credit she deserved, coming from a very humble background to world no1 in 71 and 76 is remarkable! So glad Australia is honouring they’re greatest indigenous athelete , she needs a stadium named for her now... btw I sat next to her husband Roger Cawley once he was just lovely I think they’re a very happy couple to this day! Nice talking style and elegance with you I wish the women’s game today had more of it I’m not a fan of power over finessse!

I think they all had better backhands. The continental forehands, made you hit a bit later and much more difficult to hit solid topspins. The best forehand I remember was the beautiful looking Marita Redondo. She could really smack the ball. She had a very good grip on the forehand. Sue Barker was another great forehand player.
