Many people, to this day, claim that it was her chest singing wich crumbled her voice, errant nonsense, it was the basis of her wonderful emission. Unrestrained and freely commited chest voice can only build up the greatness of the instrument. Other technical issues might have developed (she rightly called them "bad habits") and contributed to her decline, but powerful chest voice has never ruined a voice, quite on the contrary, no great voice has lacked chest voice development.

Callas's voice suffered BECAUSE OF THE REPERTORY SHE SUNG: go sing Medea, Lucia, Turandot, Sonnambula, Traviata, Aida, Norma etc, etc, etc.... with the intensity and with the level of devotion to the score that she had, THAT shortened her career. She sung lots of operas with different style of composition and different tessiture, and better than anybody else, from 1948 till 1959, after that the fatigue of the voice was clear through out the 60's and in the 70's the voice was gone. However, THE ARTIST AND THE MUSICIAN THAT SHE WAS NEVER CHANGED. She was and remains the most influential opera singer since the XXth century.

26 years on stage, actually. Beginning with Santuzza in 1939 at the age of 15 and ending her stage career with Norma in 1965. Her recorded prime lastest 10 years, from 1949 to 1959. Unfortunately we don't have her recordings before 1949 when she was singing dozens of Turandots, bunch of Aidas as well as Wagner alternating with Norma and Puritani.

I think we often speak too much of "the shortness" of some great singers prime. She, and others, gave many legendary performances with stunning displays of vocal power and emotion. I don't really care if it was for ten years or forty. What matters most is the impact that their performances created, not that it could have been longer had they not done x, y, and z during their career. The human body is fallible. The fact that anyone is able to reach the heights of perfection that Callas did for any amount of time, is truly remarkable.

@@mao1878 Only an idiot would deny the miracle placed within Ponselle's throat! And Callas was not one! Ponselle was a middle voice singer with unprecedentedly strong chest voice unlike Callas who commanded a three octave range with each register being phenomenally strong and adept, which made her the sole property owner of the title: Assoluta. I am an admirer of Cristina Deutekom, but had never really delved into her art. For days I have been listening to her arias from the Verdian repertoire, as well as Bellini, Puccini, etc ... and I have found that in my opinion, Deutekom is one of the best sopranos ever. She should be on par with Callas. She makes the same chest voice sound that Callas explains in her lessons, a dark-pitched, cavernous voice. She could trill, sing in stacatti, pianissimo, coloratura in legato and her "clockatura", not to mention that she was able to sing until high D in old age, as well as Die Zauberflöte, Turandot, Macbeth, Norma and many other roles... Anyway, rest in peace Cristina, God grant you the honors you deserved here on earth...

Grandissima!

Gotta be honest, this chest voice is no match to many gospel and other pop singers. Callas had v good chest, but it’s more her usage of the full range which is impressive. Louder chest voice singing can be found with Aretha Franklin/Mahalia Jackson and Shirley Bassey (or woman who did This Is Me). Sorry but the opera world needs to take its head out of its arsch sometimes. Mozart would agree with a canon involving licking aforementioned.

No match? This type of singing can overpower a BIG orchestra. Also this woman sounded like a man and no one in gospel music has shown ability like that. Female opera singers don't belt like Gospel or Pop singers. But male opera singer ( a good one) have LOUDER chest voice than those three combined.
@splodsquadubdob

@@moonlightelf591 Callas is singing it an octave higher, so it's not even that low (and she flips into her chest quite high - which is totally right in my view anyway). So if she sounded like a man it would be a countertenor. She is not singing at full Callas volume even in her chest. Callas spoke about 'placing' low notes and i think this was because a) yes she had a strong chest voice, but then b) she placed into within her range well. She just had a strong chest voice as any spinto coloratura soprano has (and her teacher, De Hildago had a strong chest voice too). You should also look up Bessie Smith. She sang the blues in the pre amplification age....I agree that gospel singers don't have the projective power of opera singers, but that's why they can afford to sing in their chest more. Opera singers need the mix of frequencies (aka squillo) otherwise they won't be heard. Callas would not be heard over an orch with this singing, in my view. There's no point in us debating that point because we can't prove or disprove it either way. I disagree that men are louder than women. The nature of projection is that it favours higher frequencies. This is why a great soprano will always carry better than a great singer of another voice type. This is why composers wrote wrote more for sopranos than other voice types in climactic moments with big choruses because they carried better. Writing like Scarpia's Te Deum is quite rare of a baritone, for example. But you get high soaring solo soprano lines all the time in big operatic choruses (just think of Violetta, for example).

@@splodsquadubdob whatt lol Callas's gioconda, lady macbeth, will tell you how deep, low, dark her voice is. Usually she LIGHTEN her voice just like De Hidalgo told her so she could sing bel canto roles. Female opera singers switch to HEAD VOICE or FALSETTO when they reach B4 above. But it's stupid to say GOSPEL SINGERS HAVE LOUDER CHEST VOICE. Yes, she sounded like a tenor not necessarily she's counter tenor. She's a WOMAN. She could not be a tenor unless she identify as a man. Opera singers need squillo and gospel singers don't have it. Depends on who you are comparing with. Male opera singers lose to Soprano (opera). But Male Opera singers definitely louder than Gospel singers there's no need to debate about that fact lol. Callas's 3 register are perfectly DEVELOPED.

@@moonlightelf591 I agree that Callas is very dark in such rep. I love her Turandot for this reason also. But she didn't have the biggest chest voice in the world. She never sang Erda. Gospel singers do have squillo of sorts. I would argue that all voices have qualities of squillo (the distinctive timbre allowing them to be heard). Bessie Smith sang without a mic. You can hear the fullness here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/lnilmZqVcpp9noY We don't need to alienate opera from other types of singing. I see no point in that. And culturally, it's more beneficial in similarities between musics. I agree with you that Callas's registers were fully developed. But it's stupid to make assumptions about singers unless you've heard them.
@moonlightelf591

@@splodsquadubdob No one says Callas has the biggest chest voice. But her voice was much bigger than gospel singer. Squillo is an "opera" terms and it shouldn't be used in opera. Squillo not only give you ability to sing above orchestra. You know modern opera singers have undeveloped chest voice. Yes they're still able to sing without mic. Bessie Smith sang against small instruments there. Even mosquito like Ariana Grande can be heard if she's about to sing against that small orchestra. Well well, have you heard Callas? I've never heard Callas in person, but singers like Joan Sutherland said that her voice was collosal. Joan is an opera singer. She knows opera better than you and i.
