From 0.00 to 2.25 Maria Amadini in the role of la Cieca sings Voce di donna, from 2.26 till the end Maria Callas sings the role of Gioconda! Great job! Thanks

This is just simply sublime. and one of my favorite sections of any opera. the messa di voice she pulls off on the high B flat is totally perfect. and she feels and means every word of the text.. She is so totally believable.

I think it’s due to a change in her technique and some flaws that -as she herself acknowledge- she acquired during her career. Weight hasn’t an effect on voice production at all, it can’t affect physically or physiologically the way we sing.
@Shahrdad

@@ferminsalaberri The weight loss adversely affected how she supported her voice, as you can clearly see in videos from her thin years. Her chest sinks, her shoulders slump forward, and she seems to hang on the high notes more with her teeth than on her breath. Same thing happened to Debbie Voigt.
@ferminsalaberri

@@Shahrdad so, if I gain Weight my support Will be better and my voice more powerful? There are no thin good singers? She, callas herself, said It was bad habits and bad technique and she was trying to get rid of those when she passed away. Voigt had always bad technique. Lets call things by its name. Singers are the only musicians that would look everywhere before acknowledging their faults. If a pianist has a pain on the arm they accept they are doing It wrong. When a singer is losing their voice its the Weight or COVID they had three years ago or whatever. ANYTHING before acknowledging that they are singing wrong. Just absurd and getting old

@@ferminsalaberri No, but if you were a larger, statuesque girl all your life who also happened to be a dramatic soprano, and you had learned to sing and support your voice with this larger body, using the weight as a component of your breath support, and then you lose 1/3 of your body weight, it will likely have devastating results for your voice. Debbie Voigt described it as, "When I took a breath before, the weight would kick in and give it that extra whhoomf! Now it doesn't do that." Renee Fleming, a breath support fanatic if there ever was one, described it this way: "I have a theory about what caused her vocal decline, but it's more from watching her sing than from listening. I really think it was her weight loss that was so dramatic and so quick. It's not the weight loss per se-you know. . . if one uses the weight for support, and then it's suddenly gone and one doesn't develop another musculature for support, it can be very hard on the voice. And you can't estimate the toll that emotional turmoil will take as well. I was told, by somebody who knew her well, that the way Callas held her arms to her solar plexus [allowed her] to push and create some kind of support. If she were a Soubrette, it would never have been an issue. But she was singing the most difficult repertoire, the stuff that requires the most stamina, the most strength." Callas herself said not long before she died that she lost strength in her diaphragm. You can actually see her struggling to provide some support in her videos from the late 1950s and early 1960s, with her chest sinking in and shoulders slumping forward. Marilyn Horne also warned about drastic weight loss in her masterclasses: kzitem.info/news/bejne/yoewnoyrsmhibGUsi=yI15FG_lhaKa-QLa&t=6346. Sutherland, another master technician, described it this way, and attributed it to the weight loss: "It was a bigger sound in those earlier performances, before she lost weight. I think she tried very hard to recreate the sort of "fatness" of the sound which she had when she was as fat as she was. But when she lost the weight, she couldn't seem to sustain the great sound that she had made, and the body seemed to be too frail to support that sound that she was making." With Callas, you can actually hear the voice change as she loses weight. Just listen to the Cav / Pag set recorded in 1953 and 1954, and you can tell easily where she was larger and where she was thin. It's a different voice.
