UPDATE AS OF 11/18/23: I decided to purchase a “Paca-Trapper” which is a restraint system that is gentle to use!! I plan on making a video of this system which will probably become my favorite system to do the things I want to do. I have already given Rico a very nice “Top Knot” hair cut in order to be able to see his eyes much better. He has hair that goes all the way to his upper eyelid. My other two have eyes that are completely surrounded by short hair, making their beautiful eyes much more visible.
This is my “system” for gentle containment for my 3 alpacas. Typically, I bring all three into my 10’ training pen. The first step is to halter all three (I tie up the lead ropes so that they don’t drag on the ground).
I tie the first one into one of the back corners, each of which has a “treat trough” which I give pelleted treats during any “procedures.” After the first one is tied, then I bring down two buckets of alfalfa hay that the other two can enjoy while they wait their turn.
Getting the toenails done can be very intimidating for all concerned. This system is very easy to use and the boys seem to be accepting of it. I am gaining confidence in clipping the toenails. It is easy to do the opposite side simply by tying them to the opposite corner of the “containment system.”
Hosing down the pen BEFORE their time in the “salon,” will allow their toenails to be softer and therefore easier to manage.
With all three haltered, it is easy to take them each on their individual forest walks right afterward. Their walks are about 30 minutes total, which includes there getting about 15 minutes of grazing on some fresh green grass. This contributes to their hiking enjoyment.
