Heavy excavation, dirt removal and rough terracing.
We had to move 12,000 yards of dirt to the other side of the street.
Cost was $1.00 per cu. yard.
At age 25, I reached out and pioneered a lease signed with Cal Trans on this property that was not even listed, before the fellow, on the other side of Culver Blvd. got his lease so he had to deal with the extra dirt that we moved to his side.
I approached Cal Trans and asked them if the property was available and then negotiated a sweet lease for 20 years @ $1250.00 per month. I had some prior experience after getting my General Contractors License at age 22 doing a few good years of building and remodeling homes, then purchasing a couple building sites with pre-tax auction transaction from the owner in the Topanga/Malibu area that were developed in 1976. That profit of about $80,000, was put into Marina Del Rey Skatepark Corporation and My folks as corporate officers got a loan for $100,000.00.
Total cash outlay $180,000.
Then I decided on the pool and bowls layout after confirming with and following the top SM, Dogtowners and Z-Boys like Jim Muir, Wes Humpston, TA, Jay Adams, Ray Flores. I will never forget the design lunch meeting with Bobby Biniak at the Penguin Restaurant. " Dyno.m french dip" BB.
A 230' +- banked slalom, freestyle area And a 1/2 pipe about the same 11' diameter of the desert pipes of the era were included.
There was an editorial add in the LA Times to that affect. Ray Allen said he has a copy...
Ray Allen was hired as VIP industry known PR/personality, start up manager and together we had explored most of the latest skateparks and the existing Dogbowl in SM for design ideas and criteria.
The futuristic, Turningpoint Ramp that came later was like icing on the cake for one of the all around, Badass. Skateparks of that Era.
When opened, we required full safety gear for skaters and because of that had no major, or disabling injuries. Someone contacted me recently and said I saved his life one day by making sure he was wearing a helmet, just prior to a fall from a vert pool that resulted in a gnarly concussion etc.
Good thing John Hynes had his Fly Away helmet on...
