An abundance of marine salvage yards and resources on your trip, and good information on the Beta engine. Pricey, but you get what you pay for and who wants an engine to fail when your in the middle of the ocean. You are doing really well.

Great video series, Scott. I admire your ambition and appreciate your straight forward explanation of your thinking and decision processes regarding your techniques and materials. Fred Cook from Schaefer Marine has an excellent channel documenting his restoration of a Cal 40 sailboat. You might want to check out Great Old Boats Ep. 15 where he visits with Beta Marine West to talk about his selection for repowering his Cal 40. Sounds like you have your heart set on a Beta; might want to match it against a Ford Lehman, they have a long history of reliably powering trawler yachts and small commercial fishing vessels, easily going 10,000 hours before rebuild. Economical to purchase, easy on fuel. American Diesel in Kilmarnock VA would be a good place to start. Finally, having owned several diesel boats, you might consider crafting and installing a stainless steel or aluminum catch pan under your engine before you install it. Will go a long way in keeping those inevitable oil leaks and drips out of your bilges. Cheap and easy to do now, compared to retrofit. Keep the videos coming, a joy to watch! Best of luck.

Haha! I get that a lot. Well I consider my family and my wife in particular as part of the team making this happen. Family helps when I need it and without the support of my wife and her commitment to the financial impact on the family budget, this would not be possible. "We" is also because we are sharing our project with the world. We get lots of help and advice from many people, again, some of our success would not be possible without them. So I keep saying we, maybe I look a little crazy, but that's how I feel about it.

If your finding the check outs eg @ 1:51 difficult with a multi tool and grinder there are much easier ways. Instead of using the grinder to widen the check out I would use a skill saw paired with a square ( holding square to material tight and running the skill saws base off it ) this means you get an even, square cut ( less room for water, bugs etc ) and also its way faster all round. When your cleaning up the check out nothing beats a sharp chisel about 40-50mm wide as the grain direct is in your favour. A multi tool is incredible slow compared to it. The best tip I have for creating a good check out is to do it right the first time with the skill saw ie hold it at the right and setting the depth perfect and doing multiple passes every 5-10mm say. Then you get the hammer and chisel out working down lines the skill saw left (takes about 20seconds) Hope this helps

How long ago did George design this boat? I think you should select the engine on its torque rating and forget horsepower and displacement. Some of the earlier diesel engines were very slow turning, large displacement and developed huge amounts of torque with heavy flywheels (Buda Diesel). (They were also very heavy). My advice would be to see what the builders of fishing trawlers or heavy workboats use and then find a "happy medium" for your project. In rough seas it takes a lot of power to maintain headway. What do the other builders of your vessel use? You have a great project going --- keep up the good work --- I'm really enjoying your vids!! Ever consider a volunteer helper? A lot of guys might be interested.

Hi 85 hp is way to small for your dispacment, but a great motor our kubota has done around 15000 hrs and still goes like the day we put it in, only 49 hp with two alternators and twin cyl freezer compressor in a 38 ft yacht that we live aboard at anchor moving around a lot for last 11 or so years. Kobota engines are in your smaller John Deere tractors I understand. Pitty they don't make a bigger size that would suit your boat. Cheers from new Zealand. Great project keep on trucking.

I'm sure you have looked at it, but to me one of the biggest deciding factors in an engine would be availability of parts and service around the world. Being able to get parts quickly or have a repair done could mean getting through the next destination in time to miss the hurricane or tornado or whatever. The other thing is reliability. Floating around in the middle of the Atlantic with gale force winds kicking you around or worse, rolling you over repeatedly is no fun. Kubota has a great name and service record, but if you can't get parts for 6 weeks in Subic bay Philippines you might as well have a set of peddles.

So, does it have an exhaust burner and does it require DEF fluid? Did you by chance hit a truck stop or Coop scale to estimate the weight of the lead? Was your return trip fuel usage noticeably higher with the added weight in the truck, or did towing your dad's car down pretty much equalize it out? Looked like decent average fuel economy round trip. Thanks for visiting a few different shops for those of us unable to make that roundtrip venture. Hi Scott. Sorry for the armchair admiral comments here but I, like a few others I see, am wondering if the engine needs to be bigger given the size and displacement of the boat - at sea think tides, current, wind, and waves - and on occasions all of the above! I don't know what Buehler recommends but I do wonder if the Beta's are big enough. As the Beta guy said, the bulk of their sales are to sailboats. This is their traditional market, along with river/lake/day boats, which is not surprising given the lower power range than many manufacturers and probably lower price. Talk to some marine engineers and boat owners. Cheers
@SixPointsWoodWorks

No I appreciate the input, but this is the exact engine George spec'd for this design. I'll keep researching, but his opinion means a lot to me.
@benmac7315
5 жыл бұрын
It does sound on the small size to me aswell but I'm by no means an expert and if the designer recommends that then who are we to argue. One thing to take into account though is how hard you need to run the engine for a comfortable cruising speed as it sometimes is more fuel efficient to run a slightly larger engine at lower speeds than a smaller one at higher speeds, which then has the added bonus of more power to get you of the shit if things go wrong.

Have you estimated the gross weight of the finished boat? Maybe I misunderstood but I thought the engine supplier said the top horsepower was 85 hp? A 41’ trawler I would think would be extremely underpowered with anything less than 300 hp as a single screw. 85 hp wouldn’t push that boat 5 nots and there would be virtually no reverse thrust or control in wind?

If your going to go around the world to the middle of nowhere , a mechanical engine can be a bonus . When the sea is churning, and the waves are crashing, and the cold wet winds are tearing through your heart and soul, oars still work! By my calculations, you will only need 300 pairs, and a few oarsmen! Really big strong oarsmen!! Ugly oarsmen, too, or you'll catch the Mrs sabotaging the Kubota, a lot!! As an example, if you figure about 300 gals. of diesel fuel per each 1000 miles (with favorable currents and wind and no idling time), this amount would be barely enough to cross from Texas to Florida. To cross the Atlantic figure 3 times this amount at least plus and additional 25% for a safety margin say around 1100-1200 gallons minimum. Fuel in these quantities is expensive so a fill up is around $2200.00 and up and that is here in the U.S.!! Expect to pay 2 or 3 times this amount per gallon once you leave the U.S. We have paid as much as $6.00 per gallon just cruising in the Bahamas. I bring this up to you, again with all due respect. My wife and I were full time liveaboards aboard a 41' Gulfstar sailboat and spent several years cruising the Caribbean. Usually couples and full time liveaboards live on and cruise sailboats for a reason. Life aboard is fun and exciting, especially when running to a safe anchorage to avoid weather and believe it or not, it's not a $$ cheap life style either. For us it was worth it!! Question #2, what if your out in bluewater and develop engine trouble?? It happens and more frequently than one might expect. Please its not my intent to question or be out of line here but please think all of this carefully if you don't have blue water experience try and get some, because it is a whole different world out there.

No worries my friend, I appreciate your concern and input. This boat will hold about 640 gallons of useable tank space for diesel. In ideal conditions, at about 5 knots the calculations indicate a range of approximately 3200 miles. We plan to add some additional tankage to increase that range or the option to go faster, Hull speed is around 8 knots, but we’d be gulping fuel then. Expenses are always a concern but we save and invest modestly along with a secure pension. We’ll never be rich, but we shouldn’t starve. The diesel duck plans are designed to include a small sail rig. It’s primary role is to act as a stabilizer at sea but in an emergency, it would act as a get back to land rig. Won’t win any sailing races or short tacking up a channel but should get us back to relative safety. We have a lot to learn about seamanship and sailing before we head for open water. We’ll hone our skills on the Great Lakes with a licensed captain we know before we start voyaging. Always more to learn and consider but I think I’m pretty rational and able to work through what I need to do. I’m also smart enough to know that there’s a lot I don’t know. Discovery is half the fun!

I don’t think I am, and I don’t think they use white oak structural members in stick built houses. Remember the dimensional stuff inside the boat is temporary bracing

5 years I believe. You can defer the start of it up to a year I think for situations like this where the boat is still under construction

Soft spoken south African subject I honestly dont think he is from there at all this chap has a English accent, the only chance he is south African is if he was born there and moved straight to the UK.
