@@Mr.Foxhat i’m not sure what you mean by “in-between the PS1 and N64”. N64 has a small storage capacity and it’s 3D capability was not high. I played Turok when it came out and I was appalled at the shit textures and frame rate. People think the Saturn has crap 3D but it was actually not crap. There were just more hoops to jump through to get it up to speed and Sega dropped the ball by not including the documentation, dev kits and libraries to help the early adopters. The camera is more zoomed in on Sonic so there is less to process but this is just a hub world constructed hastily for a collection of Mega Drive games. I would imagine a full game would have been better. I suppose Knights Into Dreams is really the game that replaced the Sonic game that people expected which does look nice. Considering the N64 was vastly more powerful in every way Saturn I can't say I don't like the architecture - storage medium is the major problem. Nintendo should've went CD, going with tiny cartridges cost them dearly, Mario 64 was a total of 8MB! I bet the tiny hub on Saturn is 8MB without sound! If only Sega took the SGI board we would've had a proper 3D Saturn Sonic and not the quasi 3D mini hub in Sonic Jam. Sega are using every trick to avoid drawing too far, tipping the camera above the character, blocking off areas of the map so Saturn doesn't render them - Saturn would grind to a halt even attempting a 3D platformer something of Mario 64 scale. Maybe if they went the Crash route, but lets be honest, Crash is generic and boring.

This is actually really crazy seeing them side by side, thank you! Obviously M64 is the superior game, better control and camera, but Sonic World actually looks better, rougher, but that texture work is incredible by comparison. To be fair, this was Nintendo's first effort on the N64 and this is technically Sonic Team's 4th go at the Saturn. Alas, this was only a tech demo, Yuji Naka has gone on record to say that, there was never any plan for a 3D Sonic game from them, that Sonic World was simply to see how Sonic worked in 3D in preparation for the next gen. Burning Rangers was a tech demo for how sectioned rooms worked which they used for PSO as well, but at least we got a full game from that demo! AM2 did this as well with VF Kids, a demo for facial animations turned into a full game, but that one being a good thing or not is a bit more subjective, lol.

Actually, Sonic Jam here is using higher resolution textures, not more pixelated ones, and many more of them on the screen at the same time than Super Mario 64. In fact, it is Super Mario 64 that is more simplistic in using few, flatter, lower resolution textures. Even the polygon count looks comparable between the two. It is a pity that Sega did not make a full 3D game with this sort of graphical detail at the Saturn's release because things may have very well ended up very differently for them!

It to this day baffles me, that Sega didn't use the engine seen in Jam for a full game. It was so much more impressive than for example that of Burning Rangers. Much cleaner (less clipping or pop-in) and smoother. Would have been awesome for any kind of 3D Jump'n Run or Adventure game. Something the platform could have greatly benefitted of at that time.

I knew that it eventually became SA but that wasn't exactly my point. Didn't know about it being the Nights engine though (though it is even stated on wiki I just noticed, d'oh). Looking at the info there, Sonic Team not sharing the engine with other teams was a very stupid move In my opinion. Looking at what it could do, it probably was one of the most capable 3D engines on the Saturn and all they used it for was a game, which for the most part was 2.5D…

Wasn't referring to STI in particular (though Sega wasn't exactly in a position where they could afford being picky with things like this at that time and Sonic Team didn't do a really good job themselves with the at best very mediocre Burning Rangers afterwards I'd say). Considering how important 3D games were back then and that they had a very potent engine for this sort of thing, it just puzzles me that they didn't use it to better effect. I mean, I'm actually glad about their questionable approach since I like the Saturn library very much for the vast amount of arcade ports and 2D games (and I like it much more than e.g. that of the N64, which isn't that relevant to me anymore in comparison). It's still hard not to question their practices back then.

Saturn's SH-2 Aurora was a Dual Core 32-bit CPU. Its just that its documentation was incomplete because CSK's Isao Okawa rushed Saturn's Beta into production in December 1993. Saturn's Beta was rushed 4 months too early. Originally, the Beta Saturn was supposed to be fully completed by March 1994. On top of that, early on, developers weren't used to Multi Cored CPUs. Saturn could theoretically push up to 64-bit instructions when fully utilized. We have a PDF document of the Hitachi SH-2 that points that out. Saturn never reached its fully potential. People completely underestimated its TRUE Power and blindly thought that PSX was just simply better at 3D due to its gimmicky low key illumination and lame half transparency without realizing that PSX did a POOR job at drawing polygons and doing 3D.

Comparing a full 3D game vs a 3d concept test? What?

as much as i would have loved to see a 3d sonic in the jam style. I REALLY WANTED THAT JUST TO BE CLEAR. I was overwhelmingly satisfied with 3d blast taking Sonic X-Treme's place. 3d blast was a perfect game, as much as people may disagree due to the camera it was an amazing story, great gameplay, and nice music. A set off to the genesis and a welcoming into 3d that made a smooth transition. If they had kept doing as they did with 3d blast and slowly adapted to the new style and kept sonics classic design I think the sonic series could have been as amazing as it used to. If you read this, this was my reasoning for 3d Blast fitting the missing link for 3d sonic on the saturn.

Sonic Jam is not a full 3d game like Mario 64. It was just compilation that had a neat little 3d world feature on it. Considering that the 64 was superior, this little Saturn demo had so much potential. The environments look more detail and Sonic is much smoother and faster. If they ever made a full 3D Sonic game for the Saturn, it would have been very interesting. Not sure if that was Sonic Xtreme but it was cancelled, unfortunately. Bad move by Sega. Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast is another story, its too different, Sonic and his "world" changed too much.

The big difference is Nintendo gave the 3D Mario most fans wanted. Sega were arrogant and lazy when it came to a Saturn Sonic game. A shame, as this could have been a real winner on Saturn.

Have you seen what Sonic Extreme would have been? It might not have been the move to 3D fans wanted, but it looked cool none the less. Saturn fans felt conned out of Sega's promises. In hindsight, the Saturn is a great machine. But Sega let their fans down, sealing a bad rep for the excellent Dreamcast.
@stufaman
7 жыл бұрын
Yuji Naka certainly wasn't lazy. But a lot of the heads at Sega were. N64 got off to a rough start too, but Nintendo did a better job than Sega. A lot of Saturn fans were sick of awesome games in Japan not being exported. So many imported the games themselves. Sega would insist that this isn't good for their business and instead Sega fans should buy a Dreamcast. In short, Sega spat in the faces of their fans and told them to like it. That attitude killed a lot of potential the Dreamcast had.

This is kind of an optical illusion, really. While seemingly the Saturn holds its own here, it's only because of the limited scope of this Sonic Jam hub world. This Sonic hub world is just one small stage that is horizontal and flat in nature, and not vertical. To elaborate, Mario 64 may look very plain here, but the N64's hardware could push far larger open worlds that could become both very wide and very vertical, like Cool Cool Mountain, Tall Tall Mountain, or Rainbow Ride. Or take levels in Banjo-Kazooie like Treasure Trove Cove. Those stages may look somewhat plain due to the infamously blurry textures of the N64, but they were geometrically quite complex and generally far beyond the Saturn's abilities. The closest the Saturn got to that kind of wide open geometry was maybe the third-person games Burning Rangers or Panzer Dragoon Saga. But Burning Rangers was mostly close indoor areas and Panzer Dragoon Saga had infinite plane generation and pop-in to simulate large open areas. They were admirable efforts though. Ultimately the CPU of the N64 was far move advanced than the twin SH-2's of the Saturn.
