Chee~! Peach sure outdid herself with the cake, this time!
-----------
Here's a map from the original Mario Party for the Nintendo 64! You may remember this one for the dreaded "spin-the-stick" games. Any of you folks crazy enough to blister your hand over those ones? They even started giving out GLOVES for people who purchased the game! I also blame "spin-the-stick" for "breaking" my N64 controllers!
...but enough about the "horrors" of Mario Party.
Let's look at the horrors of "Peach's Birthday Cake".
"Peach's Birthday Cake" has always struck me as the black sheep of Mario Party. It looks simple enough: The star's in the middle, and it's all a one-way path twisting through the cake. Well, unless you're unlucky enough to be sent to Bowser's cupcake to lose 20 coins! Oh, and did I mention the Goomba that decides which way you go requires a 10 coin fee? And that if you went to see Bowser you'll run right into that Goomba again? So, basically, if you're sent to see Bowser, you lose time AND 40 coins! The Goomba is right before the star, too, so you can say that the star costs 30 coins in this one.
You can also buy piranha plants for 30 coins to decorate a space and steal a star from anyone unfortunate enough to land on it. Cool, right? Well... what with there being far fewer blue spaces in this level, losing coins in mini-games, no Boo to steal coins (!), and the deadly duo of Bowser & Goomba stymieing the economy, you'll be lucky if anyone gets a star for you to steal!
And this isn't even taking into consideration that the board map is so long you'll be lucky for a potential victim to pass you by ONCE. And they have to land ON your space!) So, pirahna plants are essentially another way to waste your hard-to-earn (or keep, rather) coins on this map. Forgive us for planting them, though! (SOMEBODY'S gotta decorate that cake!)
We usually like using the 20 turn setting for all Mario Party games, but I would have to concede that this one may warrant a (much) longer playtime. The pirahna plants concept especially makes this apparent. As 20 turns, I can hardly say that the match goes peachy.
Three of us are playing (I'm Peach) and we have a "Hard" computer as Yoshi. This will allow you to see how the computer AI performs in this game. (He makes some, ah.... interesting decisions.)

You'll notice that you don't carry items in the first Mario Party. Instead, after you purchase and activate them from the shop/bank, special blocks may randomly appear and replace the normal die roll. This can be especially nerve-wracking since you never know when you may warp or lose some money, especially if you're near the star!
Koopa at the start gives you some coins, you win coins during mnigames (and lose them, too) , and the only place you can spend them at is Boo who will steal a star for 50 coins (stealing coins is free!).
In short: Coins act as a separate kind of ranking in this game, more so than the others (for tie-breaking stars) since you can't buy any items. You'll also notice the game moves faster due to this!

NOTE: This was captured on a Nintendo 64 system via an S-video cable, so the graphics/text may be sharper than you remember seeing them. This is normal.
