It reminds me of Gracie Ju-Jitsu. The Gracie family used to think, and maybe they still do, that all you ever need to learn is their style of fighting. It can win against anything else in both street fighting and inside a cage. We know now that this isn't true, although their style did change the way MMA is taught and practiced forever. I feel like Louie is like the Gracie Family used to be regarding their style of fighting. Louie felt his way was the best way or only way because he's seen such great results, even though it can't possibly work for everyone in every situation. I just found out today that Louie passed. RIP to the man I feel introduced me to strength sports and changed the way I look at training.

Such humility & measured, thoughtful responses from Dave Tate (although I do NOT agree with his view that genius SHOULD necessarily have that level/amount of ego! In fact, I'd argue that is the difference between being a genius & being truly wise; when you let go of that ego...)! If that is not being an intellectual, then I don't know what is... You rock, Dave!

My takeaway is this. Whatever it is that you have set for your goal, find a person or people that really know and believe in how to do that. Round peg, round hole. Love listening to Dave. He has become who he is by listening, observing and doing. And respecting many approaches to fitness.

Some people do better with dogma. They just want a list of rules to follow, religiously, and devote themselves to doing that. So far as masters of a "way of thought" go, Louie Simmons is a lot better than like Master Wong or L. Ron Hubbard. He might not be quite as good as he thinks he is, but he is at least the real deal to 98% of what he's selling.

Tate said in this clip "louie is genius, and with genius comes arrogance as it should. You cant blame louie because that would be like blaming the master of any disaplin. I believe in cherry picking from different disaplins tho so im not known for one thing. Im not a genius tho.." SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING A GENIUS WOULD SAY dave tate is the smartest man in power lifting in my oppinion and he literally acts like hes some normal dude whos a student still. Thats why your genius! U never stop learning. U never think u know anything. Arrogance can come with success. And people have the right. But true geniuses are humble and never stop learning. Dave tate is the only true power lifting genius in my oppinion

I disagree with what Tate said about himself as a coach. I feel adapting your teachings and techniques to an athlete makes you a master. Not the other way around. The old square peg round hole saying. Guys that only train people one way I feel is short sighted. They blame the athlete and no their teachings. What I have heard about West Side from the documentary and these videos is if you couldn’t cut it you got bounced. Some of those guys went other places and still did well. Sounds like Louie just got all the best guys and had success with his style of training. How would they have done under a coach that adapted to their individual needs?

I do believe that there's a critical point where you can start to have too much experience, ESPECIALLY in the fitness industry. When people get too set in their ways or have too much of that Randy Savage bravado where you can show them a better way or an easier way and they just look at you in the eyes and tell you that you're wrong lol.

If this was true and Louie could do this no matter the lifter and what type of lifting (raw or equipped), then why has no raw recored holders in any of the disciplines over the last 20 years ( correct me if I'm wrong), trained with him. Krill, Benni, Julius, Hall, Spoto, Hathor, Petras, Carl Yngvar. None of them went through Westside.

If you’re the master of something, you should have mastered the idea that there’s always room for improvement. If I am the best kickboxer alive and I want to transition into MMA, it is wise of me to equip myself with more skills. Otherwise, I’m going to checked hard for thinking one discipline will carry me. If I can’t master myself, what good is mastering a discipline?
