The worst part is when Mark was about to explain why Leia was a jedi and Rian cuts him by saying she isn't. Then Mark replies by "what do I know". Two lazy films. JJ just remade the first film, added a splash of nostalgia and then put a load of mystery boxes in there for the directors of the next two films to deal with. Then Rian basically came in and trolled JJ, by just showing those mysteries for what they were, empty boxes, and then spends 2+ hours doing stuff that subverts expectation by ignoring logic and story telling in the name of "doing something new and unexpected." They both claim to be fans, but they posted it in when they got their opportunity.

This is a perfect example of a talented actor giving a bad performance because the director's an incompetent idiot. If Mark had been playing anyone BUT Luke Skywalker, it could have been a great performance, but because Johnson's too stupid to understand that Luke never gives up or abandons people he cares about and would certainly never seriously consider killing a member of his own family, especially after what he went through with Vader, he brought Mark down with him. Mark's "inner mechanism" must have been screaming at him all throughout filming.

@tomnorton4277
6 жыл бұрын
I don't mean bad in the way that Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, or Domnhall Gleeson are bad. I mean bad in the sense that Luke was out of character, so it was like he was playing someone else. "Jake Skywalker" as Mark himself puts it. Mark's a talented actor, he threw everything into it, and I acknowledged it would have been a damn good performance if he was playing a different character. However, he wasn't Luke Skywalker because Johnson wouldn't let him be Luke Skywalker. I'm not blaming Mark at all - he told Johnson that Luke was out of character but the arrogant idiot didn't listen - but bad directing and writing can sometimes bring gifted actors down with them and this is a perfect example of that. Frankly, there was nothing Mark could do to salvage this trainwreck because Johnson screwed up.

When Mark is asked what he thought of the script and Johnson looks at him and says, "Be honest!", Johnson himself is confirming that Hamill was not happy at all with this new direction for his character. That basically proves all these people who say, "Mark likes this film and it's portrayal of Luke!", wrong. Mark then becomes Luke EGGSHELLwalker and tries to say positive things about it such an over-cautious way. With almost everything Mark says, Johnson clearly winces and prepares to be roasted cause he knows he messed up but Mark goes easy on him. Making him feel calm and safe... right up 'til the end when Mark basically slaps him in the face and wakes him up with that beautiful little jab, "And also if I fail, it's also because of Rian". You can see the look on Johnson's fake smile face of "Oh you little son of a...". Then to add the cherry on top, Mark spits in Johnson's face with, "A Jedi never takes responsibility" which is a clear mocking reference to his cowardly character in this film who takes no responsibility and just runs away to hide and milk alien sea cows. The proof is right there, in front of everyone's face. Anyone who keeps denying that Mark hates what was done to his character is simply lying to themselves at this point.

There was no need for it either. You can't tell me there isn't room in the franchise for a disgruntled old father figure for the new cast. Luke could have been the Kanan to Rey's Ezra. He and Laura Dern could have played off each other as the new leaders of the Resistance. But no, Disney rushed it. Kill 'em off. Kill 'em all off. There's no place for old people in Disney's Star Wars.

Exactly what I just said. This fool knows *nothing* about the history and lore of SW. He's just going by his own idiotic ideas and shallow interpretations instead of going by the history and lore of SW (which of course, Di$ney and Kathleen Kennedy happily and eagerly "erased", in order to re-write *everything* from their feminist/SJW/Politically Correct "perspective", not George Lucas's original vision for the SW universe).

Episode IX will just be more of the same. One of the biggest problem with the sequel trilogy is that they seemingly don't have a real story to tell, rather they are just making it up as they go. I honestly can't blame Rian Johnson for wanting to tell his own story, if there's not even an overarching outline for this trilogy provided to him.

dovla Let's see... They completely destroyed Luke's character, Finn and Rose's subplot was boring and useless, MaREY Sue was good at everything again, there were horrible attempts at making funny moments, the villains of the movie are non-threatening, the fact that they killed two badass characters(Snoke and Luke), that Leia is able to survive in the vacuum of space without dying, Admiral Holdo being useless and not telling anyone her plans, that they had to force politics into the Canto Bight sequence(Capitalism and Animal Abuse), that the filmmakers didn't decide to make Lando the code breaker, that they didn't use much of Chewbacca, R2, and C3PO, that they killed of Admiral Ackbar, and that Phasma is almost as useless as she was in the previous episode. Please tell me if I am missing anything.

jonathangtheguy, Well for starters, Lukes character wasn't destroyed in this movie. If you remember in the original trilogy Luke saves the day by going against the teachings of his master, i.e. they wanted him to kill Vader and he did not. It makes a lot of sense that after 40 years or whatever the time was that Lukes character would change, especially since the Jedi ultimately fucked everyone over by being religious ideologues, leading to the fascist empire. Politics has always been apart of star wars, the empire was a direct comparison to Nazism. (stormtroopers may have given you a hint in that regard) You are able to survive space for a short period of time, you know looking for logic here doesn't really make sense when she can just magic shit. Why do you care about the mary sue when luke is also a mary sue Snoke being killed off and having no spoken backstory is a subversion of SW tropes

I'm absolutely ashamed at the criticism of this movie. Films are there to present us with emotional conflict and stories we can relate with. Luke Skywalker was twisted inside out and yet died a hero, saving his family one last time. It was the most complex Luke we had ever seen and it was handled beautifully. For everyone moaning about why you felt betrayed at this version of Luke I ask you why. Why can't you see that he had genuine reasons for the decisions he made and why it was completely in line with what almost every Jedi Master had to go through.
@dodopoopinpoop

Craig Hicks Why? I'm glad you asked. Buckle up. My biggest issue is that they have Luke flat out turning on his lightsaber to kill Kylo in the flashback because "He thought he was evil." Even in the theater I instantly said out loud "Luke would NEVER do that!" So the guy who saw the good in the 2nd most evil person in the galaxy would do that? The guy who let himself get captured and when pushed to his limit still refused to kill Vader. "No I will not. I am a Jedi like my father before me!" THAT GUY would try to murder his own nephew in his fucking sleep??? His sister's and best friend's only son!?! WOW! Plus ok forget all that, what sense does it make for Kylo to beat a Jedi master but still lose to Rey? Then Rey an untrained brat beats Luke fucking Skywalker the 2nd most powerful force character in a melee fight???? Alright how does it make sense for anyone not just Luke ANYONE to stay on an island while their only sister, all their friends, chewie, Han, R-2 and the entire galaxy are DYING. Just leave them all for DEAD who cares! In 5 he rushed to his friends aid without hesitation, not to mention in 4 & 6 he helped save the entire galaxy twice before. That's why people are saying WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED!?! Oh.......but see his Nephew burned down his school cause he caught him having naughty thoughts late at night. Soooo now he's saaaaaaad and hate everything :'( Oh wait but at the end he helped, by projecting myself and then dies. You know cause why actually be there to have one last Hoora? This way he can turn into a force fart at the end to give a big fuck you to anyone that actually wanted to see Luke do something.

dodopoopinpoop I’m angry with the Luke we got in the last Jedi but I disagree with some of your points and I’m mad for an entirely different reason. For one luke was never going to kill Ben, he had a subconscious “destroy” reaction due to exposure to Ben’s darkness. Luke’s reaction to Ben’s darkness was brief and he became conscious of what he was doing and felt great shame. You seem to forget this is actually something luke would do in a vulnerable moment. Luke did this same-thing with Vader when he became susceptible to the dark side due to fear and anger, until he snapped out of it and declared his Jedi heritage and Jedi status to the emperor, to affirm to not only the emperor but himself, that what he was about to do was not the right thing to do, not the Jedi thing to do.The difference with Ben was that Luke became susceptible to the Jedi’s light side extremist mentality which tempted him to kill Ben out of fear of the darkness and Jedi vanity, the same thing the Jedi were doing in revenge of the sith. Luke’s exile was pretty rational, it made sense, he went into exile because he was a Jedi. Now you’re probably wondering why he went into exile just because he’s a Jedi. Well after the event between him and Ben he learned the ultimate lesson. The Jedi didn’t need to exist and they didn’t deserve to, they exist out of pure vanity that they are significant required components to the light side of the force and balancing the force which is completely untrue. Luke had to die because he was unbalanced like all the Jedi were when they faced the darkness in revenge of the sith. You see this explains why Rey is the future because when Rey faced the darkness she fully indulged in it, she did not fear it. This is the Jedi’s ultimate conflict and weakness, like Anakin told Obi wan, “I do not fear the dark side as you do.” Don’t forget anakin’s statement which is what luke came to learn, “ I see through the lies of the Jedi, I do not fear the dark side as you do.” The Jedi lie is that the dark side of the force is evil, all corrupting, but that’s far from the truth. The truth is that the light side can be just as bad as the dark and the dark side can be just as good as the light. The Jedi are light side extremists and like their dark side extremists counterparts there’s a corruption that results from being so one sided and not finding a balance between the two. You cannot live only in the light and not face the darkness, for then you will only fear it and do whatever it takes to preserve the light, anything like almost decide to kill your nephew. You can’t achieve peace without dark deeds, darkness is required for harmony. Where there is darkness and light there is harmony. As for the fight between Luke and Kylo, Kylo didn’t win he lost. As for the fight between Rey and Luke, there was no fight. That was Rey attacking Luke and Luke effortlessly fending her off and not trying to harm her at the same time, and allowing Rey to let out her frustration on him. Rey’s the one who took it to the next level when she force pulled the lightsaber into the fight making the fight become Fatal and deadly in which Luke was thrown off and decided to submit to Rey’s questioning since he sought not to harm her.

In my opinion, think JJ did a good job with keeping the original characters consistent. Han hadn't changed a bit, Leia was still the same, but you can see she was devastated with what happened to Ben; Chewie was his same old self; Even C3P0 still came out with his usual nonsense lines "you probably didn't recognize me because of the red arm". It's definitely down to Rian Johnson that their characters were inconsistent. Leia was the only one that seemed any good, but to be fair Carrie Fisher wrote some of her scenes...No surprise there, she should've done the whole movie (Mark could've done a bit too)! C3P0 was not himself (in my opinion he seemed quite subdued). He made Chewie look like a monster and an absolute dickhead by making him nearly eat the mother porg in front of its children (whether we like Porgs or not, it's still not something Chewie would do). I don't even need to talk about Luke but even then, you can see JJ Abrams tried to portray Luke better than Rian Johnson did, take a look at his facial expression at the end of The Force Awakens and how totally different it looks in The Last Jedi

A hinderance? Rian’s writing contradicts itself. Why would Luke say “The Jedi must die.” and seclude himself to an island to take the Jedi out of the equation... when his actions are inconsequential based on Rian’s rewrite of the SW mythology??? The Sith are still out there ruling the galaxy and apparently force users like Rey need ZERO training to become MORE powerful than a Jedi master. This new idea of the balance being if one is strong with the dark, a light will rise to meet it, debunks Luke’s idea of being able to end this all by taking himself out of the equation. Just because the title Jedi does not exist does not get rid of powerful force user now... So the movie is stripping labels as well? It’s subversive, divisive, nihilistic, ant-family, and anti-faith.

This is a series "for a new generation" or, "not your fathers' Star Wars" but, however you put it, they wanted to jettison the old fans for new ones. This, in my view, was a mistake. Same with Star Trek. They will make a few more but, in making this move, these productions will find that a dumbed down action series will have none of the legs the previous incarnations have had and will amount to a cash grab. It will be interesting to see how Disney's "Star Wars Land" will fare in the coming years because, without the loyal fan base, it will most likely become like the Swiss Family Robinson Tree house with some few fans enjoying the kitsch but, otherwise interested in the new fad that dominates the fashion of the moment. An ignominious end to what was lightening in a bottle for a generation. Just ask George Lucas....

jonathangtheguy At the same time, TFA never tried nothing. The movie just hits the beats and that's it. Characters are underdeveloped and sometimes it feels like a parody. I won't defend everything in the TLJ, but even when I don't like what they did with Luke and Han, at least with Luke you get a developed reason. With Han Solo it's a couple of lines and boom he's dead.

NightwingX012 Pretty much. The only thing that's obvious at this point is that in both cases, there's no one holding the wheel. JJ wanted to make a nostalgia fest and Rian wanted to subvert expectations and that's it. No plans to make a cohesive story like in Episodes I to VI. Let's see how they close it.

MaulSlasher What they did to Han Solo was a travesty - that terrible hand-wave of dialogue between him and Leia (I facepalmed when I first saw it). At least Luke and Leia were done justice in this movie before they left the franchise.

1. ticket sales dropped by 68% 2. toy sales dropped by 47% (shops aren't ordering as much as they used to) 3. ticket sales in China dropped 94% after just a week. the movie was criticized for having a stupid plot that insults the audience's IQ. considered a flop, 92% of theaters stopped showing the film. (making a total of 28 million) 4. on rotten tomatoes (take this as serious as you want) the reviewer score dropped to 90% and the user score to 49% Disney has now delayed the Solo movie. feel free to google these numbers. as flawed as the prequels were, I'll take them any day, at least they were made by the man himself. what Disney should do: cancel every movie in production now, even when Last Jedi made over a billion the majority of the public clearly didn't like it. cancel the one movie a year deal, it kills the brand. delay episode 9 for at least another two years. use the movie for damage control. undo Rian what's his face movie as best you can by making Snoke and Luke's death a vital part of the film. (meaning Mark Hamill has a big role to undo this film) then let the series rest for a decade or so. when returning to it drop the episode numbering. only George Lucas should have been allowed to create episodes of the main Skywalker sage. don't be arrogant enough to think you (Disney) can. if still possible, have Lucas be the lore keeper (creative producer) what George Lucas should never have done: selling Lucasfilm to Disney.

I disagree. TFA wasn't deep, but at least it had the lore intact and it set us up with question. Its logical that they had to play it safe with TFA because its sort of a soft reboot. TFA would have been epic if TLJ followed up with the big question.

Hamill had said in interviews he “fundamentally disagreed with virtually everything you’ve decided about my character.” Referring to Rian Johnson’s interpretation of Luke Skywalker. Mark Hamill tried to warn us and save the movie. It fell on deaf ears apparently. Thanks Disney 😡

This is a perfect example of a talented actor being led astray by a bad writer and director. As far as I'm concerned, intelligence is an important, yet often overlooked, part of acting because you need to get into a character's head and get to know them as well as you know yourself. Mark Hamill can do that, not just for Luke but also for the Joker - on a side note, Heath Ledger got so into character as the Joker that some people, myself included, speculated that he became more Joker than Heath and died because thinking like Joker was making him forget who he was (his family came out a few months ago and said that wasn't the case but it could have been) - but because Johnson's a fucking moron, Mark had to play "Jake Skywalker" instead. When a bad director is working with an intelligent actor who knows their character but the director is arrogant enough to think they're smarter than the performer, it won't end well.

Tom Norton , Plus Rian Johnson idea was Luke is “a hinderance”, really? Mark Hamill believed Luke as hopeful and optimistic. Hello, episode 4 “A New Hope”! A better way to explain Luke’s disappearance. He’s conflicted knowing that he has the power to kill is Nephew and the thought doing so, decides to go into isolation. But as a back up, sets up a way to find him if the galaxy is desperate peril. Episode 7 sets this up. Would’ve been a much better storyline with Luke training Rey after finding out Kylo killed Han and is now a threat to Leia and the entire galaxy.

I understand fan anger at how Luke is portrayed but I do think it works. Luke's life's work is destroyed by his one moment of doubt, his apprentice turns on him and destroys everything he built. He not only failed himself, but Ben Solo, Obi-Wan, Leia, Han, and Yoda.
