This film is a meaty beast. Doesnt have to be all deep and thought provoking. Sometimes you just need some muscles and ultraviolence. Magic.

Why is it that so many people criticise 300 for being historically inaccurate when it's an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller? Criticising 300 for being historically inaccurate is like criticising Jurassic Park because it doesn't have any woolly mammoths in it.

"They look like they've just come out of The Mineshaft on Christopher Street, in New York, after a hard night clubbing at an Alter Silvester" - 'Meet the Spartans' could never touch this.

@Slave2Reason Even though 99% of the listeners are there to hear Mark and not him, Simon Mayo is VERY necessary to the successful dynamic of the show and if he wasn't there it would be an absolute mess. If you think of the show as comedy (and I do, as it makes me laugh near constantly) then Mayo is the straight-man of their double act - the Jeeves to Mark's Wooster, if you will. He provides a much-needed balance to Kermy's more-than-occasional bouts of hysterical lunacy. He's way underrated.

Just a tiny correction. In the movie the spartans didn't accuse the Persians of being boy lovers but the athenians. Mark is still right tho. Both where in fact very much into that

Did anyone watching this film have an awkward moment where you realise "this film is asking me to cheer on a bunch of guys who throw weak children off cliffs and have their children beat each other to a pulp. And I can't do that"? And if I remember right, the Spartans despised the Athenians' wishy-washy democracy, and when they eventually conquered them (temporarily) they installed the Thirty Tyrants to rule the place.

My friends invited me along to watch this when it was released, I had spent the time between my the end of shift at work and the film's opening in a bar. I found the overt homoeroticism hilariously funny but I'm not sure if anyone of them had actually cottoned onto it at the time.

Not gonna lie. I love the movie partially bcos im a comic fan, partially bcos im an action fan, partially bcos im greek and partially bcos hell, I like a bit of unabashful machismo every so often. Of course you wanna talk historical accuracy...well...don't. its an adaptation of a comic, inspired by a hollywood film loosly based upon a historical event

I think 300 captured the feeling of the spartans (and around 6700 other greeks or so) fighting for their freedom, or fighting to slow the persians down by a week or so. I felt bad when Leonidas was killed and I felt good when they ran past the camera at the end screaming for freedom. I reckon the spartans would've liked it.

@Slave2Reason I disagree, I think Simon Mayo is a great foil to Kermode. In his intentional obtuseness, he brings out the best in Mark and often forces him back on point when Mark starts building up too much steam. I do think he can lay it on a bit thick at times, but that said I think they are a good pairing.

The movie has nothing to say about history and nor should it. It's a movie based on a comic book, based on Greek propaganda. The movie is a tongue and cheek action movie epic. That's it. That's all it should be. The movie has no responsibility to historical accuracy. Also the ancient Greeks fought in the nude....soooooooo

@socillizt4life Good list (the top four atleast). I remember years ago he was at a comic shop for a book signing and I went there and got my "Batman Year One" signed, and I recall my friend jokingly telling me to ask Miller about 'Robocop 2". Anyway, a god writer, or atleast used to be, but not in Moore's league as many assert.

@Vebinz 'Miller isn't just a man with contemt for the Middle East,as much as I love Millers best work(daredevil, ronin, sin city, batman returns, year 1 & so on)he is a racist against the people of the middle east!Kermode is right about 300 being 1 the most homoerotic films ever!Snyder is doing a gr8 job of turning some of the gr8est comic books into throw away films.Watchmen shouldn't have even have been attemted as film,it's 1 of the rare works that can only be done properly in as a graphic novel!

I was in the target audience for this film. I saw it in the cinema and quite liked it, - I was not aware of the graphic novel, although i was [somewhat] aware of Frank Miller's work at the time. However, I saw it again when it came out on dvd and in the time period between the cinema and dvd release I don't know what happened beause I found it really boring and the visual style wasn't as cool and inventive as I first thought. That said I wouldn't call it a terrible film, just....meh :)

@Hyman74Roth When I say over the top, I mostly mean how he objects to stuff like his Fred imitation though I never want Simon to slow down Mark's Danny Dyer voice. I guess I just think Simon does a naive act that fits well with Kermode's passion. Furthermore, I must say that you shouldn't post such short and internety responses as "Kermode's partner is worthless" when your rebutal to me is 97208750 times more thoughtful and interesting. Do it for the 1%!

The film’s characters, depiction of Persians & length in parts is unlikable & long, however the film’s A well acted, well directed, stylish, well written & effective war film. (65%) (3/5 stars) (mixed to positive)

I think it is proto fascist. A huge point is made of the fact they only have a problem dealing with the Persians, because one of the Spartans rescues his disabled son from his state mandated death. Also the whole war can be averted if one of the Greeks simply takes the knee to the Persian leader, who is black(not sure how historically accurate his ethnicity is) so race and disability play big parts in what passes for a story in this movie. I've seen some terrible movies in my time, but this is pretty much the worst.

When I watched this film I found NOTHING 'Homoerotic' about it in the slightest. The people bashing the film for being just that are prob half gay themselves. Men showing their chests does NOT make a film 'Homoerotic'. It's just a bloody, fun, good looking, action film. It's nothing more, nothing less.
