One of my favourite films. A film i've watched numerous times and will watch again. It isn't confusing granted but it has a great central premise which interests you immediately. The idea of making someone believe they have created their own idea is inherently intriguing and then the execution of this is top notch. The subplot of Leo's grief over his wife's death and how his projection of her gradually interferes more and more is beautifully structured in how subtle it is and Marion cotillard is the best thing in it in my opinion. Such a lovely range that leaves you heartbroken and relentlessly frightened all at the same time. It just works as as a complete experience for me.

Cobb's totem is not the top. The top is Mal's totem, which Cobb figured out in order to manipulate her. Cobb explains to the others how her totem works, which is something we are told repeatedly you are not supposed to do. Cobb can because his real totem is his wedding ring. He keeps her totem because of his obsession with her and his guilt. The ending only seems ambiguous because it doesn't matter if the top falls or not. Cobb walks away without checking the totem because the obsession and guilt are gone; it doesn't matter any more. I think Inception is a brilliant movie and Nolan a brilliant director. Inception makes many subconscious suggestions about the nature of reality: we are trapped in our own paradoxical perception, repeating behaviors over and over, believing the shadows on the cave wall are real. People hate this movie because they are unconsciously resisting these ideas while intuitively fearing that they may be true. It is a hostile rejection of how inception works, much like the projections that attack any foreign object that can potentially disrupt the dreamer's dream. I am now ready for the barrage of sarcastic hate.

@marleymike2 It was visually stunning you're right, honestly that's all it had for me. No real depth to the characters at all, for a film that many claim to be an intelligent film this seemed a large omission for me. It wasn't a bad film, but it certianly wasn't as amazing as many of the critics have claimed it is. I thought the ending was very predictable and weak. In my humble opinion, the Batman films are Nolan's "B" work. It's all about Inception, The Prestige, and of course, Memento. Sure, each of those STORIES do have some issues...especially The Prestige. However, Nolan's storytelling in those three movies is absolutely top notch...ironically, especially in The Prestige (where Nolan repeatedly slaps you in the face with the "truth"...and yet the end is still a surprise).

***** I don't want to sound like a pretentious arrogant twat, but a movie's quality is not just because of how many people like it, it does go beyond opinion. There's plenty of factors that can pretty much factually describe it's quality. But when people start writing down analysises of a movie, based on nothing but the movie, you just have to give credit and admire the movie. Getting a proper taste in anything also means that you have to accept that a movie can still be good without you enjoying it, or you enjoying a movie while knowing it's not that good, and simply knowing there are certain things, that may be beyond you.

All films build of each-other, Paprika wasn't the first of its kind... I agree it's not original, no movie is truly original, but it's not a "rip off". A rip off is something with the same plot and ideas, and there are plenty that separate Paprika and, lets say, Dark City, The Matrix, Shutter Island, and Inception. All similar movies, but not the same. The reason you hear that Inception is such an original idea is because more people were able to see it than who've seen the above films.

The film is quite rubbish, too long and tedious, too much action for what should be a conceptual movie...seems Nolan is Mr 'parallel reality/time warp one trick pony' and the dramatic music cycles and 'here we go again we are supposed to be moved' is childish writing and the end scene lacked authenticity...If DiCaprio hasn't seen his real children in 50 years...and his whole raison d'etre was being with them again to the extent he had to be a james bond action superhero many times over to find them....then he would have been blubbing like a fountain as soon as he got one sign that he was about to meet them...e.g. on hearing their voices....not just smiling as though had been at work and just come home...my anticipation of him meeting them was much much emotionally relevant than his, as my tears were starting as soon as he got to the airport in expectation of them meeting, but he didn't seem that moved by it....so seems like someone with no children wrote it and directed it.

but the first half of the film was 74 minutes long... that is quite a bit of exposition. He most definitely didn't show more than tell in this film. In fact much of it was totally unnecessary.. like the 10 minute scene they spend talking about sedatives. Why didn't he just show a character putting a powder in a drink? We are smart enough to figure it out without the long wided explanation. The constant onslaught of explanations makes the film dumber, not smarter.

Good film, spoilt only by far too much exposition. The woman was only there to serve as a 'dumb blonde' character so that the others could explain to her (but really the audience) what was going on. Trouble is, there was far too much of it - to the point where every single scene was 'characters tell you what they will do now. Characters do what they said. Move on to next scene, rinse and repeat'. Inception is one of the most simple and straightforward films ever made, and way too much exposition

I think this film's weak-point, as strong as it was in others, has got to be the characterisation in that I couldn't really care less or sympathise with the characters. I never got to bond with any and I couldn't really care whether they succeeded or not. The film lacked an emotional input, sure other films such as Kubrick's utilise character distancing purposefully, but I felt here that the characters weren't very strong and, consequently, the emotion or the excitement failed a little.

I think that Basil Exposition showed up way too many times in Inception, though it is a fairly enjoyable thriller. There definitely is a great deal of characters explaining the plot to each other; is it possible that someone broke into Dr Mark's dreams and stole his knowledge of this? Though containing several moments that made me sigh "oh brother" and do a facepalm, it is a visually dazzling film with beautiful cinematography, that I found entertaining. But it's quite overrated.

If it's really that easy, why don't they just dream massive guns for the whole film? I shouldn't have to use my imagination to make it seem like it's not nonsense, it should work within it's own context. It is nonsense in any context.

The more you argue, Feyd01, the more the issue looks like a failing of imagination on your part. Individual elements of Inception are nonsense, yes. There's a Discovery News article that goes through them, and they are many. All you have to do to enjoy the movie, though, is accept the central premise of the dream-connecting device. You don't even have to find it plausible, only logically consistent with the movie's internal logic, which it was.

Even then, both 12 MOnkeys only use the science as a vehicle for the storyline, and also the science works in the context of the film. All I saw was a ham fisted attempt at a sci-fi story, dressed up in so much technical wizardry that the masses fell head over heels for it. No acting worth mentioning, Caprio is slowly improving, maybe by the time he gets to 60 he might even be convincing. Average at best is my verdict. Really thought I'd enjoy it but I absolutely hated it. I found it wasn't that complicated as ling as you listen to the endless, boring dialogue from the characters basically explaining stuff to each other. Visual effects were great and obviously the idea behind the story was interesting. My main problem with it was the absolutely appalling character development. Because I didn't give a shit about ANY character in the whole film I really didn't care what happened to them which made me incredibly bored. Not only this but your just left with so many questions about why these people went on this mission - they have absolutely no back story. And I know some people will say this is purposefully done as they could be just the subconscious, but I highly doubt that as it causes you to not care about the outcome of the film.

Overall though it's a story about Dicaprio's character, it's HIS motivations and HIS story that are really of consequence save in the spots the others backstory is requisite to playing out his tale (like Cillian Murphy's story with his father) and overall Dicaprio's story is pretty thoroughly mapped out for us. We understand why he's doing what he's doing, how he gained the skills to do what he does, why he needs to do it, what obstacles make it a challenge for him and so on. Now they could go on and bloat the film up, painting huge portraits telling us the other characters motivations, but ultimately they're side characters, their entire role in the narrative is to act as proxies in bringing us an individual's story and it would wind up bloating a film that's already extensive and large in length and scope as is. Look at Dark Knight, I don't need to know what experiences brought Joker to do what he's doing, hell, we never even learn his actual name because it's irrelevant to the impact it has on his interaction with the protagonist of Batman. *shrug* I loved it, I don't know that I'd go saying it's the greatest film ever or anything, but it was an intelligent, gripping personal drama that told a concise, tight story about it's sole protagonist and I thought it did it quite admirably.

@thedroogfulable I couldn't agree more with you. I thought it was a chin stoker's wankfest. Every person I met who told me it was amazing in turn could not actually explain to me what it was all about

Yes I know but I don't like it anyway. Batman with empty warehouse and skyscraper apartment instead of Bat Cave and Wayne Manor just sucks balls. All in all, if TDK was a fillm whit three dimension characters and not so opelny stupid I would ignore it but it's not and I take it as the last straw. I don't care about anything happens in TDK.

the films supposed complex themes existed in the mind of Nolan and did not achieve any inception, not beginning nor transposing anything into my mind: simply because it talked its images in one ear and out the other. Merely an elaborate thesis delivered with a very expensive overhead projector. Try making a film next time.

@RobTangren In what sense is this "inside info"? So there are two characters with the same names, who cares. Thieves are ridiculously common in movies, and names mean nothing. Your point is irrelevant. Nolan is a fantastic director who can create films on either huge or tiny scales (Inception or Memento), and have them both be incredibly meaningful, relevant and interesting.

the problem with all the lets say "haters" of this movie is that they say "it poorly written, plot holes, unimaginary, confusing the way to trick you" but they just cant say exactly whats wrong........ you can easily say "Citizen Kane was unimaginery, poorly written", whatever....... but do you know meanig of the term CONSTRUCTIVE CRITISISM?!.... try to point out weak points

Disagree with your opinion of Inception, it's a great film, but emotional crap was missing, great special effects, I don't think it was poorly written, mind you I might have to watch it again. But I do agree with the Chris Nolan point, good director, but not the best, Martin Scorsese is one of the best in my opinion, with Francis Ford Coppolla plus others.

I completely disagree with Kermode about the line, "Whose subconcious are we in now?". Ariadne is intelligent enough to realise what's going on and so the line was put in as a tool to let some of the slow viewers keep up. I'm not a fan of film tools which aren't part of the plot.

ONE OF THE WORST FILMS EVER MADE. It might work as a comedy, if it wasn't so loathsomely serious. I hate it.

I hate using the word overrated and somehow suggesting that because I don't like it, people are somehow misjudged. I also don't want to be rude. But that movie fucking sucked and is overrated and you're all wrong.

@hanshotfirst1138 Hmm, I see where you're coming from and you do have a point but I think treating a recognizable style as the only qualification for the "auteur" is a bit reductionist and ignores the rest of Truffaut's theory (and the further developments). If I'm being perfectly honest I never really liked debates over auteur status and I probably regret using the term initially, what I was opposed to is the suggestion that he could be the greatest director of our generation which is crazy.

@JD1010101110 I'm sorry but that simply is not true. Chris Nolan is good is nowhere near an auteur level. His films are very entertaining but it's not that much more.

I disagree- the biggest problem is how talky it is and how much expository dialogue there is. It takes more than an hour before you get the rules explained to you and can finally have some fun with it. I like the movie, but I find it incredibly frustrating at points.

I love that Mark Kermode can explain why something is brilliant in 10 minutes. I agree with him about how Inception shows that would people like is never as dumbed down as producers and film companies think.

Heh. How ironic is "the getting lost is purposeful and you'll always find your way despite being labyrinthine in construction" when a labyrinth is specifically a maze with only one path all the way through it.

Inception is a plot synopsis masquerading as a complex intelligent film. Inception should've been about the characters as they go on this bizarre quest but instead it's just about the quest. It'd be like if Lord of the Rings was three hours of people talking about why they're walking to put this ring into a volcano.
