I feel it should be clarified that the alien in Alien 3 wasn't CGI, it was a scaled-down puppet filmed seperately and composited into the scenes, along with hand-drawn shadows. It was a complicated process which didn't really work and looked quite bad, and a lot like CGI, but ultimately it was practical... Well, except for literally _one shot_ where the alien is splashed with water after having been smothered in molten lead, but besides _that_ it's all practical.

There are other CGI shots: right at the start, the escape pod/ship crash landing in the ocean is CGI and the debris being blown across the screen as the camera pans across the landscape is also CGI. If you listen to the 2003 dvd audio commentary from the effects team, they also mention the shadows on the "ceiling alien" when the torch is thrown up at it - that's also CGI.

Any other science officer from the Alien universe, even Alien Isolation, would've worked just as well and it would've made the film stand on its own. I can't see myself rewatching it as much as I would've liked simply because "Rook" plays such a central role. It's not something you just "fan edit" out, but there's definitely a much more enjoyable Alien film buried under all of these hamfisted callbacks. "Get away from her" would've been enough of a reference and I will personally edit out the "you B" out of my copy of the film. It's not a word that character would've ever said, and it loses all meaning because you don't have that "mother to mother" context.

I felt overall there was enough originality in there and it's far better written than either alien resurrection and the prequels. Just seen it. I'm actually shocked at how bad it was. I'm not a hater, Alien is a simply incredible piece of cinema, the dialogue, the plot, the themes, the twists, the tension. Fede Alvarez just made the B movie that studio execs thought the original was going to be back in the late 1970's. Romulus is just so far removed from the original it's actually hard to believe. The dialogue is atrocious, there's no time for any real tension to build because it moves so fast from one thing to the other, like a tiktok compliation. The only part of the film where some genuine tension was allowed to build was the final act, but even that was fleeting. This film felt like it was made for people with the attention span of 2 mins maximum, which is such a contrast from Alien which kept you absorbed from the first to the last minute. The Ash CGI was absolutely awful, it looked like a bad puppet. if they wanted to resurrect a malucious android Fassbender is very much still alive. I honestly expected this to be a 3 maybe 4 out of 5, but I'm struggling to give it even a 2. For me this is easily the worst Alien movie barring the AVP films. All my worst fears of what Disney could do to this IP with a reboot. Extremely disappointed and sad to see that Disney have stripped the soul out of Alien.

The whole element of suspense is completely lost when we KNOW who is just xenomorph fodder and who is to be the lone surviver, even the split objective / mannerisms of the Holm/Fassbender/ Johnsson characters is so derivative and telegraphed! I'd argue they completely misunderstood, and went against, what worked about Alien. Ridley has a peculiar habit of not really 'getting' some of his most iconic work (e.g. Blade Runner. Deckard as a replicant just undermines a main theme; Batty and co's humanity vs human inhumanity). Alien never needed to be "elevated". It was distinct and unique by itself. Prometheus is a dumber film than Alien or Aliens despite its pretensions, which really undermines the entire attempt to make it [unnecessarily] more. I think the real curse of the series is that it was/is a series... Alien and Aliens were borderline miraculous; two great, distinct films by great directors at their height. But after that? It just should've been stopped. But of course it's a business as well as an artform, so it gets exploited. And here we are with Romulus, which seems to mostly just be a highlights reel.

Long ago, when Avatar turned up, it was reported that Scott was making 3 Alien films in 3D....then it went dead. The next news was Scott was making 3 scifi films and that by the time the 3rd one finished, it would link up to Alien. The films were NOT to be Alien films. Prometheus came out, and it was not the film it was due to be. It was to have more gore and more F-bombs, but the studio got worried and wanted a lower rating. The next issue is more down to the studio because rather than push the sci-fi, they pushed it into an Alien film, so when many people left the film, a huge portion of people said, "Where were the Aliens?" Covenant was not the film Scott wanted to make. The second film was called Paradise Lost. It was about Shaw reaching the home planet, but the studio was not happy with the reception of Prometheus and wanted Scott to basically make a film and put more Aliens in it. There was a story at the time that someone at a meeting had overheard Scott say as he left (I think it was a conference call?) "If they want Aliens, I will give them fucking Aliens" Scott is not without blame, but 50% of how those films went down was the studio either interfering halfway through or just getting Scott on board to help sell the films via "Look, it's the original guy" Going to see Romulus today, and looking forward to it.

Saw this today, have to be honest, I thought it was a well-intentioned disaster. The Ian Holm character was basically like an exposition puppet - effectively the leading role and the film's narrator - I was amazed how he kept returning to key scenes. The CGI for this character was awful - Bishop in Alien 3 looked masterful compared to this. The biggest issue is that Alien was never a horror film in the classic sense - it was not a horror trope and didn't have an expendable cast waiting to be killed off - Dan O Bannon was so inventive. This version was pure Horror genre instilled into Alien - minus what makes Alien so special - which is a degree of ambiguity. It felt like Event Horizon at times in terms of tone and didn't 'feel' like an Alien movie. On the plus side though this film could bring in a new younger audience to the franchise. I'd say this film made me appreciate Alien Resurrection even more. That film despite it's issues had some artistry - this film has no artistry. Wanted to love it but came out thinking it was inferior to the AVP films.

I thought it was far from perfect, but I loved it, and I thought instead that the classic Xenomorph movie was done after Alien 1 and Aliens 2. I think Ridley Scott with Prometheus tried to go into cosmic horror and it was disturbing how humans basically lost control of their very DNA and life, and how David the Android took control. It's disturbing in a further way than just the Xenomorph as a dangerous foe you have to blast with a shotgun is. That's been done to death. Just saw it. Was extremely disappointed. “Silly” is the word that just keeps coming to my head when I think of this film. Personally I don’t really mind if I film ironically makes a few direct references to previous films in a series, but here, after a handful of direct quotes from the series, it just felt beyond obnoxious and pandering. Especially, the “get away from her you, b*tch!” reference. That was the moment that finally took me out of the film completely, and it ruined the end of an admittedly really cool sequence. The CG’d character was also really bad, and there was no good reason it had to be THAT character. Also, I’m always kind of annoyed in these films how the time between a character getting impregnated to the time it bursts from their chest is dependent entirely on what the script requires, and not on any sort of logic. A character in this is impregnated, and births the alien literally minutes after the facehugger comes off. And another alien becomes fully grown literally minutes after being born, too. It’s just all incredibly silly. It all looks fantastic, though. And David Jonsson is really good.

There was lots to like and dislike. I agree with MK on most things here including the distracting CG Ian Holm. However, personally I felt Romulus had nothing on Prometheus in terms of the pace, character/world building and general sense of foreboding.

I honestly thought it was pretty poor. It was basically a remake of the original alien with a bit of Prometheus thrown in at the end. But not as good as either of those films, the aliens looks a bit Netflixy and seem to be weaker than they were in the previous films. The best bit was the end which did feel a bit like Prometheus. Not sure where somebody’s five star reviews are coming from that I’m seeing.

I wish Hicks and Newt were still alive, and they and Ripley were exploring the galaxy, being hunted by WY and xenomorphs. That would have been a better direction for this franchise than black goo, incredibly inept space crews, and Micheal Fassbender playing the flute.

True true, I agree there - Noomi Rapace was a highlight of the later films. They could have made a great film after Prometheus, based on the arc of her and David meeting the engineers and exploring their planet. Killing her off was a dumb decision.

Agreed with EVERYTHING that Mark shared. The excessive references (borrowing) from other Alien movies felt like incredibly lazy scripting and an incessant littering of easter-eggs for fans of the franchise to notice (they were mostly blunt ie: the water dipper toy placed conspicuously in between two actors conversing)

I totally disagree with regard to "Prometheus". It was a brave attempt to dig deeper into the Alien-verse and explain why there is life on Earth. Big themes, original ideas, should be applauded but the majority of cinema-goers seemed to prefer a predictable, alien slasher movie regrettably. This new movie, apart from a few novel twists, sounds like yet another boring homage to earlier and better films. Why make it at all if you aren't going to expand the franchise? Ridley Scott should have given this the thumbs down. The trailer suggests the main characters are all uneducated London teenagers and one of my pet hates is movies which expect us to believe that young people could be assigned roles of great responsibility. What happened to "The Right Stuff"? Why not just call the movie "Teenagers In Outer Space"? Of course, that was another name for B-Movie "The Gargon Terror". I won't waste my time watching this clichéd tosh when there are so many great South Korean dramas to watch on NETFLIX.

Had an incredible time with this film - love how it expanded upon and kind of unified the world of alien - the series really needed that, but very much with Mark on the deep fake stuff, it was damn distracting and I kind of wish they didn't do it, but apart from that the sets, visuals and tension were just great and I'm kinda of glad that Alvarez did honour the prequels even though they weren't great and the batshit stuff at the end I honestly enjoyed

I would give it exactly the same review as Alvarez' Evil Dead: a totally respectful late entry to a series that respects the original while being brave enough to take it in its own direction. Truly tense sequences, gorgeously horrific (horrific gorgeous) visuals, wincey painful deaths. By no means as good, but totally enjoyable self-contained entry made by a clear fan.
