@scottcuk1 I haven't read the books but I thought that was half the point in the film. The World is all built around power structures and belief in power. No Mark. They had to make a decision and they put Irulan in a more comanding and powerful position. Her and her fathers relationship was drastically changed from the books and so were the two of them as characters. Christopher Walkin was playing a figurehead emperor and he did it perfectly. He harboured no illusions about what hos role is. He was a human figure that gave his humanity up for power. The problem is he was given a minor role, almost no scenes to shine except the very beginning and end. And while any other actor would have been invisible, Walkin made the emperor stick out. My one gripe was shortening the timeline in the middle of Pt2. That forced so many plot points out the window. There is no St Alia of the Knife. There is no relationship between Paul and Chani or Jessica and Chani. There is no systematic dismantling of the Harkonnen spice production, so we miss all the infighting and politicking. And it precipitates that jarring end scene. The best sub-plot was the descent of Stilgar from Chieftain to Cultist.

Yes. I think this is the best summary I've seen! For all its pomp, these two parts seem to be the inside looking out, and not the outside looking in. In my mind all the components are chess pieces on a board being moved around, but we're given the view from the pieces. For someone coming to Dune for the first time building up that meta-picture will be quite hard. The Irulan framing from the Lynch version gives that structure. Oh, and that final comment about Stilgar was probably the best part of the film.

Wrong. Chalamet was a hyper feminized boy, not a real man. In the book, it takes years before Paul attacks and kills the bad guys. Here, it’s just the same wimpy Paul, totally unbelievable he’s a messiah or leader of anything other than the drama club of a high school. He cries every 25 minutes in the film. Weak. Beta. Zendaya was worse- they tried to turn Chani into a tough man, and wears shoulder pads in one fight scene that made her look like an offensive lineman. Absurd. She’s hyper masculinized as part of woke DEI ideology. Horrible. And she’s the ONLY fremen who speaks perfect American English without an accent. Absurd. Only a teenager caught up in celebrity pop culture social media influencer BS could praise Zendaya for this. Poor casting choice.

I always viewed Christopher Walken as an alien so I thought his presence fit perfect in this sci-fi epic. I only wish his accent was more pronounced. He didn’t have enough scenes to really get the full Walkeness. I would’ve also have liked to have seen him riding a worm. Maybe they could’ve added a moment where he was kidnapped or had to travel by worm to get through the desert or he himself just hops on a worm and goes for a ride to everyones astonishment, no hooks required.

I'd trim the arena scene and reinsert some minor elements of the second half of the novel, but this was a thematically excellent adaptation of the novel. As much of a cautionary tale as the source material. Herbert would wipe away a tear (Fremen style) from the "They get it... Finally, they get it !" realisation. As Mr. Kermode says, all the spectacle is fine, but it's the themes and ideas that really bring the story to life and leave you with a lot to think about. Paul continues on his antihero journey (rather than the clichéd heroic/hero's journey) and given the storyline of Dune Messiah (Herbert was explicit about the title being ironic), he'll have a lot of personal twists and turns and even changes of heart to face. Many of them too little, too late. The Atreides claim to descend from ancient Greek heroes, e.g. Atreus (a very medieval/Renaissance era idea to big-up one's family tree), and appropriately, their house will now face their own Greek tragedies. The Atreides as the main "heroes" and villains of the series, rather than the more obvious and predictable villainy of the Harkonnen. Paul's revolution will devour its own children, including him and his new-found pride and cynicism. The fabled Kwisatz Haderach made up by the Bene Gesserit literally means "shortcut", and the whole series is a warning against throwing away ideals, ethics and honesty in the name of a cynical shortcut. I'd say Paul is more "Lawrence of Arabia elevated to Space Mohammed" than "Space JC". ;) Like Alexander the Great's or the Roman emperors' state cult of the ruler as a god-like being, even adopting existing religions to suit the new state cult. Or all the totalitarian regimes demanding blind worship of their leaders, etc. Herbert wasn't particularly religious, but he positions the warlike, conquering and totalitarian cult of Paul in contrast with the hermitage-and-humility tradition or ideals of the Abrahamic or Buddhist faiths. Paul not as a hermit philosopher of the desert or wilderness, and healer, of humble background, but as a would-be 'messiah' of the sword, of conquest, subjugation and cynicism. Paul's not Space JC or Space Buddha, but more like an outright antichrist type figure. Something even he grows to realise and admit in the sequel, to his own horror and disgust. He states with regret in the sequel "It's as if I'm living in a constant apocalyptic dream...", or that everything he interacts with becomes seen as an enemy to be humbled or vanquished (Midas touch of the abuse of absolute power). A war in his name indeed... And one that eventually undermines even the continued existence of the Fremen culture and the rule of the Atreides.

"Hermitage-and-humility" may be a part of the ideals of the Abrahamic faiths, but their histories show otherwise. Religious warfare was made practice in the last 2500 years in Europe and the Near East. Frank Herbert had a lot of bad examples to work from.

@@Art-is-craft Nah, by your logic we should accept the performance based entirely on the script telling us he's the emperor; would that hold up if I played the role? I didn't quite put my finger on it when I watched it and it didn't impact my enjoyment of the film at all (which was enormous, one of the best sequels I've ever seen in cinema), but Walken felt jarring throughout. Even just when he appeared for the first time, I thought "Really?" as even just seeing him felt out of place in contrast to the rest of the performance. Not his fault. Everyone has the right to their opinion. I do not share the view that Christopher Walken falls short in “Dune 2” because he is recognizable and “just being Christopher Walken”. Every major recognizable actor in this film such as Josh Brolin or Zendaya would just be themselves then, as they too are “just” playing parts. As for perhaps “not looking the part”, Walken in my opinion does not have to look, say, as physically imposing. He can be the more calculating type of ruler as he is here, and channel the striking face of Walken’s character from “The Dogs of War”, a film that came out not long after Walken won his Oscar for “The Deer Hunter”-before he became better known for his “Walken-isms” thathave fueled so many impressions. I am grateful that Walken got the opportunity to be part of and grace this nearly perfect sci-fi spectacle of our current times…

Honestly my personal quibble w the film - which I absolutely loved - was Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha. Not enough character development for someone who is supposed to be the counter to Paul Atreides. It felt therefore more like a bit of stunt casting to help bring young girls into the movie. But I still give this movie a 5 out of 5 stars. The best science fiction movie in 40 years.

I didn’t think that Walken had the right qualities to bring to life the emperor we’d heard about; ruthless, intimidating, calculating.
