This is how you should make a popcorn movie. There was enough characterisation but the main thing was robots hitting monsters, and that was great. I fully recommend you watch it. This isn't a stupid CGI fest.

Michael Bay does a lot of trash over and over again, but we must not forget that he once upon a time made a pretty good little action flick called "The Rock". Nobody trash talks John Woo as much because he got out of the game when he started making rubbish but Michael Bay just keeps going and going and going to the point when it starts becoming offensive.

Looking forward to this on Monday. From what I can gather it'll please Del Toro fans like myself as well as the popcorn blockbuster crowd. In my mind that's what I want, and that's what I wanted from Into Darkness too. Iron Man 3 was a little bit weird and I'm still not sure what I thought about it. Man Of Steel, on the other hand, was truly abysmal and fell on every level for me. Michael Shannon was chewing throughout, everyone else was gasping for air and/or yawning. This, Elysium and Gravity.

LOL Do some people expect this movie (ignoring stuff about Bay since I don't care for him much) to be some sort artistic genre breaking majestic motion picture Mona Lisa ? It's a film focusing a lot on human's piloting mechs to fight giant monsters =_= The focus is the visual spectacle and the action usually in these types of concepts. It's not like the birth of another Citizen Kane :l Thx for the opinion btw Mark! Keep reviewin. XP

Michael Bay's real problem with his movies like "Transformers" is that the stories are too complex. They need to simplify the stories. Pacific Rim's story was simple. The 1st Transformers is considered the best one because the story was fairly simple. 13 Hours was a simple movie, but still overloaded with too much action for the average movie goer.

Akira Kurosawa wanted to make a Godzilla movie but Toho apparently prevented that from happening. Its actually healthy for directors to do both big blockbuster movies and art-house movies, as the skills that are learned from each can feed into each other. Del Toro is expressing his creativity just as much in Pacific Rim as he was in Pan's Labyrinth.
@Hoopla10
11 жыл бұрын
Are you suggesting that because two movies have robots hitting each other they are essentially the same? Robot Jox is the same as Pacific Rim? I agree 100% with Kermode about "the dead hand of Michael Bay" and the way it is reflected in the Transformers films. Del Toror also understands film-making on a much deeper level than Bay so it isn't surprising that is also reflected in Pacific Rim.

But Del Toro actually understands designing robots (clear, distinct silhouettes, detail and "kibble" used where appropriate, so you can follow their movements and identify them easily), whereas Bay insists on "doo-dads" and ridiculously complex slabs and chunks which are shapeless and indistinguishable. So, yes, Michael Bay should take note.

The characters and their dialogue was all absolutely horrible, but that gave it some of the schlocky charm of its B-movie inspiration. The real stars in a movie like this are the CG and special effects guys, they made the film look and feel great, the mechs and the monsters all have character and originality.

The funny thing is, I chose Milk Duds instead of popcorn for this popcorn movie. Out of all the movies this summer, I do believe I've enjoyed this one the most. I liked the characters, I liked the story, I liked the comic routines by the scientists and I do believe if a Meghan Fox is necessary for an audience they should just rent some porn instead. It was a great play between the male and female leads. Good movie.

It's extremely difficult to do both in a film. Either you use the monsters and robots as a backdrop and focus on the humans involved, or you focus on the monsters and robots fighting and add interest with the human element. In a longer work like a series (Neon Genesis Evangelion is a common example, but I think it's overrated) you can have both, but action films as a genre kind of need the - well, the action - to occupy centre stage.

How is Inception better than Pacific Rim? They're both based primarily on visual spectacle. In PR at least the situation of the characters actually generates tension, whereas I really didn't care whether Leo and his gang survived or not in Inception. Was there even a possibilty that any of them would die? I can't remember. High stakes are essential for a good action movie IMO. Also Inception wates a lot of time pretending to be philosophical when it's really just an espionage/action film.

You're looking for the wrong things out of Pacific Rim. Was the story meant to be deep and thought provoking? No, the story is meant to be good enough to make a good action movie. Was the acting great? No, but to most people for this kind of movie it was fine. Are you asking this movie to be more than it was ever intended. Yes, very much so. The movie was only meant to be a fun couple of hours with giant robots and monsters fighting.
