I dream of the day Mark returns to writing jaw droppingly beautiful songs like this. I understand he needs to follow his muse, but he lost me after Benji.

Same, I don't know what the hell happened to his music. It sounds like drunk mumbling over a half-assed backing track he created. His music used to be so soulful and full of emotion, but now it just comes off to me as angry drunk banter.

Dunno, his newer music is really beautiful in its own way. Common as Light and Love is easily one of his greatest masterpieces, certainly one of his most emotional. I Also Want to Die in New Orleans ends off with Bay of Kotor, which is also quite moving on a primal level. There are plenty of these moments to be found on Universal Themes and Mark Kozelek, plus others. Yellow Kitchen's a bit boring, but there's a lot of substance there that is uniquely provocative in comparison to the rest of his catalogue. Mark still has a lot to offer. People are really hung up on Benji, but he really has so much more to offer. You just have to pay attention and engage with what he's doing. That doesn't mean if you do so, you'll like it. But for people to assume there's nothing powerful there is quite ignorant.

I've made so many bad decisions and I think my time is close, and although my life is mental anguish I try to be thankful that I've been able to hear beautiful music and experience the love of my family. To all others struggling with things, whatever it may be, I hope you find the strength to live with dignity and as much love as possible. I've traded my principles for temporary relief and it's no way to live.

Perfectly symmetrical sentiment. This song captures the despair of loss and burnout so perfectly and keeps calling us to love ourselves. To never stop loving ourselves. To never forget to love ourselves, because we are more beautiful than the withered garden of banalities that we wander in our daily lives. Have you forgotten to love yourself?

Part of me wants to go on my rooftop and tell everyone that Mark Kozelek is the best singer/songwriter of the last 25 years. The other part wants him to remain anonymous and be "my obscure favorite". I wouldn't wish the Red House Painters on anyone. I spent 10+ years listening to them EVERY day. Some people use drugs/alcohol to cope, I use music.

This is beyond priceless. One of the best songs, performances ever. Mark is a genius. The tears begin to flow, so many memories surface, bittersweet, moving my heart and soul. Taking me back in time, to the present and future. The lyrics are... Moving. Timeless. Beautiful. Painful. Cathartic. Nostalgic. Full of memories, reflection and melancholy. With beauty that falls, in between Grateful for the smiles and the tears in life. It seems that we cannot have one without the other. It is like a circle. Such a treasure here. Thank you, Mark. Much love, hope and healing to all 💞

I can't let you be, cause your beauty won't allow me Wrapped in white sheets, Like an angel from a bedtime story And shut out what they say, 'Cause your friends are fucked up anyway And when they come around, Somehow they feel up and you feel down. When we were kids, we hated things our parents did We listened low to Casey Kasem's radio show That's when friends were nice, To think of them just makes you feel nice The smell of grass in spring And October leaves cover everything. [Repeat: x2] Have you forgotten how to love yourself? I can't believe all the good things that you do for me Sat back in a chair like a princess from a faraway place Nobody's nice, when you're older your heart turns to ice And shut out what they say; They're too dumb to mean it anyway When we were kids, we hated things our sisters did Backyard summer pools and Christmases were beautiful And the sentiment of coloured mirrored ornaments And the open drapes Look out on frozen farmhouse landscapes [Repeat: x6] Have you forgotten how to love yourself?

Songs for a Blue Guitar is one of the most beautiful albums ever written. Even the covers got turned into slow, dense, and hauntingly depressing instrumentals to fit with the even better originals on the album. I’ve never found a musician or album that’s made me feel as deeply and intensely melancholic and mesmerized as Mark Kozelek
