Mark Rylance, the acclaimed actor and former Artistic Director of Shakespeare's Globe treated those Telegraph readers unable to make it to the Hay Festival to a reading of the The Wake by Paul Kingsnorth.
Set in Lincolnshire at the time of the Norman Conquest, it focuses a group of guerilla fighters battling the invaders from across the Channel.
Rylance's visit to the Hay Festival came amid a busy schedule for the 54-year-old, who is currently filming a BBC2 screen adaptation of Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, in which he plays Thomas Cromwell.
