We finally arrived in Gaziantep, a city in eastern Turkey that we wanted to know since a friend from Canakkale told us about its famous baklava.
Gaziantep, formerly called Antep, is one of the most important cities in southeastern Turkey.
It is very close to Mesopotamia, and the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, where civilization began.
Before sampling the city's famous cuisine, we took a stroll through its bazaar, one of the most important commercial centers in the region. There is a relaxed atmosphere, with little tourism and where people are surprised to see foreigners.
- Yemek.
- To eat.
- To eat?
Most came over to chat with us or try to sell us something, but without insistence.
- Does it look good on me?
- It looks good on you.
- It's a bit warm. It's really nice. Can you see me walking around in this?
- And it's very good! It's just that it doesn't cover me here. With glasses. They have nothing to do with it, right?
- How does it look?
- And it's nice.
The region with the largest pistachio production in Turkey.
Also, Antep is famous for its copper products, and the production of Ottoman-style shoes.
But come on, we are already a little hungry. We are going to try the gastronomic wonders
the city has to offer. We found the ideal place to try baklava, and they prepare it on the spot.
Baklava as it is known today was invented in Istanbul in the 15th century in the Topkapi Palace, although it is also said that its origin could be Assyrian, Greek, Roman or Arabic. The most characteristic ingredient of this dessert is pistachio, which is usually produced in the Gaziantep area, maybe that's why it is so tasty there.....
