In a German documentary on Weimar Republic cabaret, I came across this obviously after-the-event audition by Marlene Dietrich for the part of Lola-Lola in the Joseph von Sternberg film 'The Blue Angel' (1930) at UFA Pictures in Berlin.
Dietrich sings the slight and fluffy 'You're The Cream In My Coffee' in the character of Lola-Lola -- angrily mocking the frivolousness of the performance requirements of the 1928 American song with its music by Ray Henderson to lyrics by Buddy G. DeSylva and Lew Brown.
Weimar Republic cabaret stars Paul Morgan and Max Hansen are then seen watching and commenting on an older heavily built woman singing 'Falling in Love Again'.
This is followed by inserts from the 'Blue Angel' itself, showing Emil Jannings as Professor Immanuel Rath watching Lola-Lola in his vision as an C18 court lady.
If anyone knows more about this footage - which seems to come from a later film -- it would be great if you could comment.
Enjoy!
