I had the same experience with a model 60 I handed down to my son. It hadn't been shot in almost 20 years. After a range day I took it apart only to find about 50 pieces of the buffer falling out. Long story short...I found a video showing a paper clip securing the hammer spring in place. A paper clip would have saved me over an hour and a lot of aggrivation of trying to put it back on correctly. We live and learn. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's fired a spring across the shop! 🤣👍

Thanks Al. I know I had this gun apart before to clean it, just not this far. I took it for granted and should have done a little more research beforehand. Live and learn I guess. I know I won't make that mistake on this rifle again!

Bought mine in 1968 at 13 years old. My brother and I walked one mile down the main street of our small town with my new rifle slung over my shoulder. Of course, the owner of the store knew my whole family. Still have it today and, with a few minor repairs over the years, it still shoots great! It does not have the last round bold hold-open feature.

MCK this was my Dad's gun. I'm surprised that when I opened it up there was not a big glob of RTV sealant in there. He used that stuff on everything! He would have done something like that for sure. One thing about these guns, they just keep running,

My Marlin 60 is so old it doesn't even have the bolt release. Still has the weird white buffer in it. Doesn't even lock on an empty tube. I'm sure it'll work flawlessly after your fix. Happy Holidays.

if there's no bolt release, it was made before 1981. you can find the year by subtracting the first 2 numbers from 100. i.e. the serial number on mine starts with a 10 so it was made in 1990.

I have a 1999 Marlin 60 (my “Y2K” special). I haven’t fired 50 rounds in it. I took it out punched some paper recently (2022) and it started acting up some. I took it down for cleaning (first time ever: except for the barrel) and the buffer was destroyed. It wasn’t anything you did that caused it (it’s just a cheap part). I hope I can secure a new part somewhere. Thanks for the info. These true Marlins are becoming quite collectible.

I love the aspect of 3D printing parts. I'm not sure about the material yet. I'll use it a while and post a review later. The gun will get plenty of use now, my son LOVES shooting it as much as the 10/22. He likes the ease of loading the tube vs. magazines.

I inherited a Glenfield model 70 from my father-in-law who had pass away & it been my closet for about 3 years dicided to take it out to my gun club and pop off a few rounds it worked for a awhile & reallt enjoyed it but about 6 weeks ago my charging /bolt was jamming figure it need some cleaning so took it apart & like you saw the Buffer was all crumble up & ordered used from Numreich parts begin to remove the horseshoe clips & spring came flying off work on it off and on for the next 3 weeks getting tired trying to get back together. :( Saturday June 10 after spending most of the morning I finally got it together & did a dry fire & since I live in the city it was not possible pop off a few rounds unlike the 60 mine is magazine feed. It nice little gun & many times thought of taking to gun shop for repair but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ stop me.

You could razor knife a split in the polymer retainer block. Slip it on. The fit to the receiver will hold it in place. It merely cushions the rearward stroke of the bolt. The calibration of the spring will insure proper cycle function.
