This interview is outstanding on so many levels. The questions, the pace, and the energy were amazing. I was sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time and never wanted it to end. I do not know Marshall Jefferson personally, I can only comment from a fan's perspective. He is truly a legend in this culture and is such an integral part of House Music history. He along with Larry Heard are the ones responsible for ushering in advanced musicality and layered instrumentation to early house music. He took it from just drum tracks and synthesizers to full out songs with real vocals and lyricism. He is such an influencer in house music. It seemed like everybody started using pianos in their records after Move Your Body came out. Pianos went from being an anomaly to an essential ingredient in the genre. He also deserves way more credit for his drum programming skills as well. It appears as if he is a pretty humble guy, yet speaks with a tone of authority that commands respect. Your productions and contributions have changed my life. Thank You! 🙌🙏🙌

Steve Hurley interview, check. Marshall Jefferson interview, check. Now all we need to complete my personal top 3 Chicago house music idols is Larry Heard (I know you’re working on it Mo). In my episode of everything house music and more (that’s episode 6 if you haven’t seen it) I mention how Marshall Jefferson helped usher in a level of musicality and chord progressions to Chicago based house music with records like Devotion, Taste My Love and Someday. It was great to hear the stories behind these records from the man himself. Top 3 favorite episode.

I've seen a lot of interviews, talks, interactions with Marshall Jefferson over the years. This has to be one of the most humble and factual ever. Maybe it's his age that has softened him. He seemed collected and avoided any of his earlier exaggerations of reality. Putting those down to 'wishstory'. I've always had a soft spot for Marshall Jefferson. He's instantly likeable. Even more so nowadays.

I also think it has something to do with the person who interviewed him, who is down to earth as well.

Another Homerun interview. My 2 cents tho, on the "House Music" naming, I think it is getting skewed. Not everyone went to the Wharehouse, we Southside kids called it "House" because we went to/DJ'd local House parties, not because we played it in our own houses.

Lololol, when I first learned of the term “House Music” and starting listening to it, I asked, why is it called that? I was told, the musicians that made it, were self taught, and created in the their House or basements or attics, where these early pioneers could be creative, they weren’t generally musically trained or sophisticated as far as their production or equipment, but they were able to make good danceable grooves that emulated Disco and early Euro dance songs that proceeded this new genre. A well know DJ in Chicago, the person that taught me how to spin told this to me around 85’. Thankyou Marshall Jefferson for pathing the way for all of what we see today!

It's already been stated in the comments but to reiterate. This was 100% good, thank you! Absolute gem to listen to this and hear from such a influential person in this industry. I could have listened for hours. You likely don't need such a list for future guests, but while I'm typing here. Some other guys that would be cool to hear from might be: Derrick Carter David Morales Danny Krivit Junior Vasquez Mark Farina Francois K Mickey Oliver Mike Dunn

I remember telling MJ on the deep house page a long time ago when I first heard Chicago house vocals I thought they were raw and out of tune. Not on the level with RnB Pop artist from that time. He disagreed, he was like no, the vocals were as good. It does work on Move Your Body like an old blues record. Ten City is like Sylvester vocal wise. People’s taste in music is often an acquired taste based on their local music scenes. This is true with Chicago house, NY style house from the 80s. A lot of music now is same sounding because of EDM and the internet.
