On my Marshall amps I use a guitar EQ pedal, pretty much set flat but with a slight bump in volume output. Its amazing how much this boost effects the sound of the amp. I sat this amp on top of my Marshall DSL40CR combo and plug it into the DSL40CRs speaker and ran it through the DSL cab, I was doing a comparison, I was shocked and surprised just how good the MG HDFX 100 sounded!

I bought that head for a good deal at a pawn shop years ago. For years i ran my Zoom 606 thru the front until a buddy taught me how to run my Zoom thru the loop. I prefer the loop. Setting A1 on my Zoom 606 has been my goto distortion sound for 20 years. My zoom 606 ombined with the MGHDFX and my Les Pauls and Explorers, i get the tone i want. I feel no need to upgrade.

I have a katana 100 MK2 head and I cannot get "THAT" Marshall amp sound, this MG Marshall does, its a mid high gain amp and great for Classic Rock! With pedals is does the Metal! On the Crunch channel (JCM800 channel) I dime all the tone knobs, run the gain noon or higher and roll back the master volume. It seem like any Marshall in that it benefits from turning the volume up high and then use the master volume to lower the overall sound. I find using the right speaker helps with smoothing out any high end harshness or grainy-ness. I discovered Jensen MOD speakers do a great job, there like Celestions but there not fizzy and remain smooth and focused in the highs during high gain saturation. Note: I use my NUX Pexi Crunch as a guide to setting my Crunch Channel, thats when I remembered the old saying about Marshall tone controls of "turn all the tone knobs up full, everything up all the way", seems to work well on the Crunch Channel : )

Good vid brother.....I,ve had one or two of just about every SS amp Marshall has made over the years..the old black face 212,s, Mosfet lead 100 and lead 12,s, Valvestates, (8100, 8200, vs-100 never had a AVT YET), HDFX, HCFX.....they have a bad rep, but they still sell, and when time come,s to clean house of your tube gear, and multiple halfstacks, and rebuild, these are what we go for, with pedals they "keep us going" til the big ducats get saved up (and we make up our minds lmao) ...actually have a cat droppin off a MG100dfx combo later today for a nice price..but heres the thing...if I had any gripe about them, it,s that up until this current economy, you could danm near pick up a hundred watt MG head, or combo around $100, $125- 150 all day...lol...but that,s changed....asking price,s have danm near doubled.(the one today is comin at ol skool realistic price) ..so Johan, Dave Simpson, and now Ricord...(stop turning folk on to how good these are when your in a pinch or on a budget......it takes the cheap out out of it......) Just funning (mostly) Cheers man! \m/ \m/

@RickordProductions
Жыл бұрын
No you did not buy a bad head. If the audio is coming through the headphones then it’s obviously working. What you don’t have is a speaker cabinet to output the sound from the head. You need a cabinet. The amp head is just the power amp and preamp. You should’ve gotten the combo amp version of this particular Marshall. It’s the power amp, preamp and speaker all in one unit.
@tenzura
Жыл бұрын
You're supposed to connect the amp to a cabinet before you turn it on. Ignoring this will damage the amp. Check the user manual to see if using the headphone jack disables the speaker load and makes it safe to use without damaging the amp first. I doubt it because this is the kind of feature found on "some" newer amps and these MG's are from 2004-2008. You'll need to either buy a cabinet or a reactive load box like the "Two Notes Captor X." I run all my amps and even my amp modeling pedals through my Orange 2x12 cabinet with Vintage 30's. FYI: The cabinet is the better route to take and so much cheaper if you don't already have a computer, monitors, a DAW, an interface and a microphone or a PA system and since you're new to guitar, you probably don't. The Captor X is useless if you don't have anything to connect it to, to hear the sound of your amplifier. Unless the amp was designed to be used in other ways like I mentioned above, "new features on newer amps mostly," you should never use it the way you're using it. I don't know everything but I'm here to help, ask me anything.
@RickordProductions

@@tenzura I wasn't sure if he was referring to getting sound when he plugged his headphones to the headphone output or if he was referring to plugging headphones from the speaker out. I'm pretty sure he didn't plug his headphones where you run the cabs considering the headphone port is in front of the amp and that would be the output he spotted before looking in the back of the head.
@rocknroll1973
Жыл бұрын
Yeah mate you need a cab. The cab ohm need to be the same or more ohms as the head output. Let's say your head is 8ohm output. You need a cab with 8ohm or 16ohm. If your amp is 8ohm, don't get a cab with less than 8ohm such as 4ohm.

The MG head is the worst head Marshall’s ever produced . The cleans are shit without pedals. It does take pedals very well though. The effects loop is above average. I do have the 412A and 412B cabs and they’re great for the price point.

Yeah I get a lot of people don’t take kindly to the MG series with Marshall but I think it all depends on what you’re looking for when dialing in your tone. I somewhat agree with what you said about the clean channel but I’ve heard a lot worse with other amps and it definitely does kick it up a notch with pedals, however the gain channel sounds killer stacked with a good overdrive pedal but I use the Friedman BE-OD through the clean channel stacked with the Plumes and it sounds even better going through my 2X12 cab.

There’s a lot of us that don’t want to or care to use a piece of gear that you have to sit hours with just find a tone that works for you. @@RickordProductions I hear you. Also why I SOLD my FM9. LOVED the tones but it was a royal PIA to navigate. I could have learned it but did not want to. I feel like they failed to make it user friendly and on principal that annoyed me. Even complicated tech can be intuitive. Nothing about the FM9 was intuitive- at all. I have tried the ME-90. It is not in the same league as the Fractal. You could dial in 5+ main tones with it though and be in great shape. The effects are world-class. I like my Boss products including my Katana and the online library but again, it's not a Fractal- not even close IMHO. If they make a new version that is user friendly, I will grab one.
