I am very familiar with that area and the road you took was the one that parallels Poncha Creek and runs south of the Marshall Pass Road. A very scenic route and though a little rough in some spots, it can still be negotiated with an all wheel drive vehicle with a bit of ground clearance. The actual Marshall Pass Road is much wider, smoother and can be driven by any vehicle with more than a couple inches of ground clearance. Both roads lead to the top of the pass and make for some excellent viewing year 'round, especially during aspen season. R=There are also about 100 moose in the area around the top of the pass this year and it is a treat to see them, though it takes luck and timing, as they are usually more active early and late in the day.
