Reporter and cameraman get to preview the ride of the new MARTA line while the train is being tested. The line runs from Avondale to downtown Atlanta which opens tomorrow. Eventually the line will extend beyond the perimeter. The Avondale station has a special entrance for bus riders with a transfer. There are more than 1,000 free parking spaces. The next stop is the beautifully decorated (with murals) underground Decatur station. The MARTA tunnels have a four-foot walkway for safe exiting of the train if there is a problem. The Eastlake station sports bike racks and lockers. The third rail that powers the train is dangerous. Kaufman explains the other stations on the line, the dual computer controlled/operator driven train, the smooth quiet ride, the air conditioning. Inman Park residents used to ride a streetcar to reach downtown. The King Memorial Station provides a view of the developing Atlanta skyline. The temporary terminus of the line is the Georgia State Station near the university, government offices and Grady Hospital. The fare is only twenty-five cents. It took four and a half years for construction. Aerial shot of MARTA train riding on the East line.

The MARTA Rail network, a component of the MARTA transit system in Metro Atlanta, has four service lines: the Red, Gold, Blue, and Green Lines. The Red and Gold Lines mainly run along the North-Northeast corridor, and the Blue and Green Lines run along the West-East corridor. The two corridors connect at the Five Points station, which is the only station where all four lines could transfer. In 2021, the system had a ridership of 22,912,700, or about 83,400 per weekday as of the second quarter of 2022.
June 30, 1979 - MARTA's first train, the East Line, began operating between Avondale and Five Points Station. It also marked the start of MARTA's combined bus and rail service.
