@@MisaloSloe technically the Custis slaves belonged to her first husband's estate and she did not actually own them. Regardless, this is besides the point of this discussion. MV acknowledges the many enslaved men and women who lived and worked at the estate and tries to do their story justice. Take your attitude someplace else.

I was unaware of this statement to the public at Washington’s death. In the absence of almost all of the correspondence between the Washingtons, it serves to show the depth of feeling and regard they had for one another. A really beautiful tribute, and so beautifully presented here.

George was always in love with Sally Fairfax.

Not all historians agree with that. A few lines taken out of one letter has given the impression he loved her. If you put all his letters to her into context he most likely was not in love with her. When he wrote her, his letters were not mailed to her directly so she then could secretly read them. His letters to her were put in a larger envelope with other things and sent to George Fairfax her husband. Letters people received back then were read aloud to other family members and the writing during that time period was typically very florid. I'm not sure that George would openly send her a love letter knowing her husband would read them. He more than likely cared for her but being in love I'm not so sure. I think the Sally Fairfax thing has been overblown and romanticized.

What a farce! Martha Washington was evil! Anyone who gives a human being to her granddaughter as a wedding gift, and constantly recites Bible verses such as, “Slaves obey your masters” (Ephesians 6:5) and “I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am in” (Philippians 4:11) to intimidate her enslaved laborers is just plain evil!

If you were a wealthy southerner on a plantation back then you'd be a slave owner too. BTW, slavery has never ended. Modern day slavery affects upward of 40 millions people worldwide. YOU benefit from that through products you buy regularly from technology to textiles to foods ect. You losing any sleep over it? Do you think native Americans are evil for having slaves? How about the black slave owners that existed in America from the 1600's through the civil war? That doesn't get taught in schools because it's not politically correct. How about Africans enslaving and selling their own, leaving them in cages for the slave traders to pick up?? How about the slavery that has existed since the beginning of mankind? Many famous and admired people in human history had slaves. You upset about that? Nope, you like so many others cherry pick what offends you. It's only the white people on a southern plantation and it's crickets to all the rest. Maybe you should learn how to put things into historical context. Let's fast forward a few centuries shall we. What are we going to be vilified for that we consider normal? Because we will be vilified you can take that to the bank. Our time will look unenlightened to people of the future. For the way you judge people of the past so shall you be getting judged.

Oh come on she was a person of her time you can’t judge her by today’s standards. You can judge her actions but you can’t dehumanize someone and dismiss their flaws as just human beings of the time. I suppose you don’t call Lincoln out because he’s the great emancipator when in fact he had racist views himself before the Civil War. Sure she wasn’t an abolitionist like George but come on a “Farce”? That’s a bit extreme

Are you aware of how they spoke in this era?! You have but to read their letters to see that they wrote and spoke on a formal level not used in daily language of the 21st century. Thankfully, it is much easier to understand than the old English of Shakespeare’s day.

I think they need to get some actors that are more apealing than these two old and tired looking persons who play George and Martha , Washington had dark reddish brown hair and was physically fit during Revolution, Martha was said to be tiny and striking. These actors now look like George and Martha as two haggard old alcoholics.

Martha was actually plain looking. When she visited the camps during the winter one of the soldiers described her as "short, thick and very motherly". A friend and guest at their home described Martha as " Mrs Washington combines in an uncommon degree great dignity of manner, with the most pleasing affability, but possesses no striking marks of beauty". George was more studly though.
