The 1959 Martin D28E is an extremely rare and unique instrument that holds a special place in the history of acoustic guitars. The model combines the legendary quality and construction of Martin's D28 with electrical amplification technology, something quite unusual at the time. The guitar retains many features of the D28, such as the solid Sitka spruce top, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, and a mahogany neck, all of which contribute to the guitar's rich, balanced tone.
What makes the D28E unique is the addition of two DeArmond pickups built into the top of the guitar, allowing the acoustic tone to be used electrically amplified without losing the original character. These pickups are controlled via volume controls and tone knobs, providing flexibility in adjusting the amplified tone. Despite these modern additions, the guitar retains the classic aesthetic of the standard D28.
