INTERESTING TIDBIT: Martina wore what she called her "lucky dress" in the final, but it almost didn't happen. Before the final, Wimbledon officials informed Martina that they would not allow her to wear the dress for the championship match because it did not adhere to their rule that clothing must be at least 80% white. Martina started crying, and told everyone in the locker room of what had transpired. Billie Jean King was there, and when she saw this, she marched to the Wimbledon committee to confront them about their edict. She returned to the locker room an hour or so later with a smile on her face and told Martina that the committee had changed their mind and that she could indeed wear her "lucky dress".

Interesting. In 1995 they brought in the "almost completely white" rule which meant that that type of dress certainly wouldn't have been allowed.

It was Martina's first Wimbledon win and first grand slam win. Two great legends who showed why in this match with some incredible play, especially with those wooden racquets. Evert was so gracious in defeat and she was genuinely happy for Martina, knowing it was a first grand slam win. Fantastic stuff. They would play a lot of slam finals in their prime.

I just got interested in tennis this year, and I attribute it to two things: 1. Iga Świątek’s 37 match streak 2. My dad telling me about the time that he and my mom got to watch Martina Navratilova practice in the 1980’s, which subsequently took me down a rabbit hole of her matches and made me become obsessed with the game. It’s for these reasons that I think I tend to be slightly more interested in the WTA, past and present (though I do love the men’s game as well).

@@hardsam68 Chrissy let Martina in a set and a break then at 5-5 serving Chris hits two easy short balls in the net then a forehand long . Never seen evert play such a poor game especially at 5-5 in the third . I think yes Chris was in love and had taken a 4 month break playing Martina losing to her at eastbourne after having a huge lead in third 4-2 and after having match points intimidated her . At 5-5 Chris serving just thought she wouldn’t beat Martina due to loss and no confidence from taking that break that contributed to her being as heavy as she ever was . The next year she’s married and perhaps too thin more concerned of showing off her figure in that yellow bra tyke dress . In 81 she tied her hair back , wore socks and got down to business . In 78 after losing twice in two consecutive tournaments never lost a match rest of year beating Martina 3 times this was number one in 78 by ITF

Just realised Chris Evert is the first female player(might just be the first player of any) to use double handed backhand. She started playing tennis at 5, when it's too hard to hold the racquet with one hand. Her father let her use two handed backhand as a transition, but she would keep using it throughout her career. Some people would argue Connors, but Connor's backhand is a mix between single handed+double handed.

Dr Len Welch: Chris Evert wasn’t intimidated in my opinion because she didn’t have the weapon to hurt Navratilova’s game on grass, despite of two wins here against her. Chris game was too passive on the grass. She was just more interested in putting back more balls and just waiting for Martina to make the errors. As the match wore on, it was Martina who was making less unforced errors and more winners. It's no surprised that Martina always had the edge over Chris at Wimbledon and had beaten Chris 8 out of the 9 times they met here, including in 5 title deciders. Martina went on to win a record 9 Wimbledons and finished runner up 3 three times!!

Chris won the two semis they played 76 and 80 semis . Grass rewards serve and volleyers. Martina is and was the greatest serve and volleyer the game has or will ever know- touch , feel, strength , and court sense. She has an innate sense of when to pounce, always moving forward, forward. Whenever Martina lost it was always in some tie breaker, 7-5,6-4 in the third set. Rarely ever did she lose in straight sets. Chris did it may be 3 times. Amelia island, Los Angelo’s 87 rest of the two set losses had one set lop sided and the other set close.

The 92, 84 and 70 , 85 final Chris played very well except for 79 final and came close but Martinas game was made for Martina . Chris’s mind is thinking of the eastbourne match up 4-1 in the third and being Roman Catholic I bet is feeling “ martinas in shape because she’s worked hard and I haven’t worked hard by taking 4 months off so she deserves the match .
