Asia & BJ, Marvin's "Lets Get It On" and "What's Going On" are next for you. He had amazing duets with Tammi Terrell such as "Aint No Mountain High Enough", "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By". Creedence Clearwater Revival does an amazing 11 minute cover of this song.

Marvin Gaye's version of this song will always be the definitive version for me, although the CCR and Gladys Knight versions are great too. Gaye's voice fits the song perfectly. And the strings and the backing vocals, the drums, guitar, bass and keyboard. Perfection. I remember how shocking it was when he died and how tragic it was. Check out these other Marvin Gaye classics when you can: "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)", "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby", "Ain't That Peculiar", "That's The Way Love Is", "Sunny", "What's Going On," "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)", "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", "Can I Get A Witness", "Let's Get It On", "Got to Give It Up" and many more! Plus, check out his duets with Tammi Terrell -- "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" among others.

Arguably the greatest Motown single (#1 for 7 weeks) and one of the all-time great recordings in general. Brilliant vocals and production. Haunting. The song had been recorded by two other Motown acts earlier (Gladys Knight had a hit with it in a different style just a year or two earlier). It was originally an album track for Gaye and he was the one who insisted it be released as a single. He was right on.

The grapevine is by word-of-mouth, person to person down the line. There is also a stretch of Highway 99 (now Hwy 5) that travels from Bakersfield, Ca to Los Angeles that (at least in the past) was called The Grapevine. The first time I heard the Credence Clearwater Revival's version when it came out in 1970, I was driving through The Grapevine section headed for LA on the way to San Diego. This classic of Marvin Gaye's came out in 1968. It's kind of a crazy song, the lyrics are so sad, yet the music feels so good. It is easy for the chorus to get stuck in your head.
