I met Marvin in 1974. Became one of his sparring partners in 1976. Back then, it was Marvin, Robbie, Tiger, Steve, Fernando, Tony and me. Petronellis was a boxing gym out of the movies. An old abandoned office building, two rings, a shower stall and that was it. We were a close knit group. Once Marvin won the championship, all of a sudden everyone started coming to the gym. They’d show up for a week, and then leave. Last fight I worked with Marvin was Mustafa Hamsho, went in the Army after that. Marvin was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Humble. Always happy smiling. I was good friends with Robbie, we hung out all the time, so I got to see the Marvin not many people did. I have not one thing bad to say about Marvin. Ever. He was a good man, a great champion, and a great friend. He was held back for years because of bad deals made by those around him, only a few know the true story. Everyone is gone now, so it makes no difference. Broke my heart when I heard he died. I still can’t believe it. No one had a bigger heart than him. Rest In Peace my friend.

There are lots of reasons to like Hagler. His record was 25-0 when he had a couple of controversial decision losses to Bobby Watts and Willie Monroe but he later avenged both losses by KO He avoided nobody and beat everybody they put in front of him. After he beat Monroe (for the second time) by 2nd round KO in 1977 his record was 34-2 (27 KO) and nobody wanted to fight him. Monzon retired rather than fight and neither Valdez or Corro would give him a title shot but after Marvin he beat Monroe he went on a 20 win tear with 17 KO aqnd there was no way Vito couldn't avoid him The division was still mob controlled when they met at Caesar's and there's simply no other way to explain how Vito held onto the title other than it was Vegas. Hagler won every round. He outclassed him in the final 5 rounds and he beat him like a drum in the last 2 rounds. Watching the fight again after all these years confirms it and listening to Cosell is a hoot. Marvin would be pounding Vito and Cosell would be screaming "Hagler's hurt .. Hagler's hurt" but Cosell always did know which side of his bread was buttered This would be the first time Hagler got robbed in Vegas but it wouldn't be the last and while Leonard was avoiding him for 6 years Marvin reigned the middleweight division like a champ for 7 years with the highest KO percentage in boxing history

@@leeinoregon1326 Vegas was an interesting place when Hagler fought Vito at Ceasar's in 1979. Tony Spilotro was dropping bodies left & right and the FBI brought racketeering charges against Spilotro but the case was dismissed. That's when his attorney Goodman was elected mayor of Las Vegas and in 1979 Lefty Rosenthal was running the stardust & tropicana & freemont & the Marina aka MGM Grand and Ceasar's was very much mob controlled Against that backdrop Hagler fought Vito in Vegas but he had no choice. It was Ceasar's or nothing. The rest is history and it shouldn't come as a surprise that he lost a decision to the mobs boy from Queens. Vito became Middleweight Champion beating Corro in 15 round decision at Monte Carlo in 1979 and the interesting aside was Howard Cosell, who was working a live broadcast to the USA telling viewers that Corro was way ahead until somebody showed him a gun. Cosell then began saying Vito was ahead and Vito was very much Mob controlled. He won 9 of his first 10 on POINTS at the Sunnyside Gardens in NY and when he got KO's by Weston he suddenly started fighting in Italy and when he came back he was suddenly 37-3. Then he fought exclusively at Madison Square Garden until he became the WBA WBC middleweight champ in Spain. Then there was the draw v Hagler before Minter beat the shit outta Vito TWICE and London was an interesting place when Hagler beat Minter in 3 rounds. From 1981-1986 Hagler defended 12 x and while Leonard was hiding Hagler was knocking out the toughest MF's in the division culminating in 1986 when he took on John Mugabi and Mugabi was no joke. He was a 25-0 beast with 25KO's when Hagler took him out after 11 brutal rounds and after 62 wins and 52 KO's Marvin had nothing more to prove and he was ready to retire. That's when Leonard said he would come out of retirement but only if: the fight was in Vegas and the ring was 22'. Leonard would pick two of the 3 judges and he insisted the fight would be 12 rounds v the 15 Marvin wanted. Those were the terms he demanded and Hagler wanted Leonard so he agreed. Hagler buckled Leonard with an uppercut at the end of the round 5 and he pounded him in round 6. In round 9 he hurt him with a left cross and in the final round, Hagler banged him with a left after backed him into a corner. The fight ended with Leonard running and when he wasn't running he was holding. Richard Steele warned him for holding more than 30 x and when it was over Leonard told Hagler "You beat me man" . He later denied it but the HBO microphones don't lie and even Leonard knew he lost the fight. Moreti and JoJo Guerra were the two judges Leonard picked and Guerra's 118-110 score was so obviously biased Duane Ford, chairman of the Nevada State Athletic Commission made sure JoJo never judged another fight in Vegas or anywhere else. Sports Illustrated said "Leonard stole rounds with a few flashy and carefully timed flurries and then ran" and with that Leonard ran off with the title. Hagler pleaded for a rematch but Leonard chose to retire again 14 months later Hagler retired saying he was "tired of waiting" for Leonard to grant him a rematch. A month later Leonard announced another miracle comeback to fight Donny Lalonde and in 1990 Leonard finally offered rematch and Hagler told hin to go fuck himself. Hagler finished his career at 62-3 -2 w 52 KO and the highest KO ratio in history and you're trying to say Leonard beat him... fuck you too. I don't know if Marvin was the greatest middleweight Sugar Ray Robinson was before my time but I know Carlos Monzon quit in 1977 rather than face Hagler and I know Leonard ran from Hagler his whole fucking life.

Vito puts on a great performance in this fight. He was the hero of the night, really, because he entered the ring as a heavy underdog. I saw this fight when it happened. Hagler was robbed big time. He beat Vito from pillar to post and the fight was declared a draw. He wondered afterwords if he had to kill an opponent in the ring to win. The robberies in boxing continue to this day. Granados vs Porter wasn't as bad but a robbery never the less. @@Allan-et5ig , yup, I watched it live back then, and a couple of times since. By round 9 Antuofermo was disrupting Hagler's rhythm, forcing Marvin into his pace, crowding and tiring Hagler. That made it easy for biased judges to side with Antuofermo, who had zero quit in him and was surprisingly quick with some counters. On the plus side it revolutionized Hagler's career. He never again let another fighter dictate the pace until he met Leonard, who fought a smart spoiler style, like Bernard Hopkins. Before this bout Hagler was occasionally too tactical and cautious with sharp opponents, like his first meetings with Bobby Watts and Willie Monroe, and maybe even against the aging Bennie Briscoe.

To be fair, Hagler didn't rout Vito. The champ held his own for almost half the fight. In no way was it a draw. But not a solid win either for Hagler. Nowadays some demand that boxers jump around different weight classes to prove they're "great". Hagler was an excellent middle weight who had no problem staying at middle weight. I never saw Hagler in subpar condition and the competition he fought was very good, far better than what Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins defended against. Hagler even fought some legendary fighters, like Watts and Briscoe, before winning the title

first 4 are clearly Hagler's--that means of the remaining 11 rounds, Antuofermo had to dominate the fight to even things up if you believe that, please get your eyes examined. ---- Every time I hear the crowd going crazy for Antuofermo and Howard singing his praises, all I see is Vito's head going side to side like he's watching tennis. Nearly every time Vito scored or flurried, Hagler neutralized it with counterpunching Hagler is the ultimate in getting screwed--46-2-1 before you get a title shot, and they do this to you Small wonder he almost murdered poor Alan Minter

The trick with this fight is to watch it with the sound off, no announcing, and just watch for who is landing the effective punches. It is strangely similar to the Duran fight, which Hagler won easily everywhere except on the score cards. Something about Hagler, maybe his menacing look, led people not to appreciate his boxing skills. Here the first ten rounds were a sparring session. Hagler controlled the fight, jabbed very effective and also beat Antuofermo convincingly on the inside. Antuofermo barely landed a clean punch. Just look at their faces. Hagler wasn't even marked. In the first ten rounds I had Hagler winning rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10. I thought Hagler outboxed Antuofermo in the 8th, but that it was close enough to be even. Cosell said Antuofermo was coming on in round 10, but watching it again and again Hagler won that round cleanly. But as with Duran, the crowd is so squarely with Antuofermo that everything he does is getting amplified. He would generally come in head first, typically eating a punch, and then get outworked on the inside. Yet the crowd was reacting to his charging in. And the way he used his head was borderline dirty. Ironic how that worked out in their second fight. So at this point unless Antuofermo dominated the last third of the fight, he cannot win. Except he didn't. Not even close. Hagler had one of his strongest rounds in the 11th, landing again and again and dominating him on the inside. Yet watch round 11 with Cosell's commentary and watch it without; two different fights, although he acknowledged that Hagler hurt him at the end of the round. Round 12 was a brawling round. Hagler landing more punches and jabs but Antuofermo was active enough that I'll give him the benefit. Round 13 was a competitive round but Hagler again outlanded Antuofermo. Even round. Round 14 was a clean win for Hagler. Another hardnose round, but Hagler clearly outlanded him and beat him on the inside. Round 15 was another brawling round and another clean round for Hagler. Landed a lot of good shots. So I had Hagler winning 12 rounds of a 15 round fight. The others were close, even rounds where I'll give to Antuofermo the benefit. The first two thirds of the fight were relatively easy for Hagler. Antuofermo turned it on in the final four rounds, where it became a brawl, but Hagler held his own and took the final two rounds, with only 12 and 13 being debatable. Point is even giving Antuofermo a shut out in rounds 11-15, which he clearly didn't get, he lost anyway. The lesson here is that Hagler was not given credit for his boxing skills, that when you are fighting a more popular fighter you cannot leave anything to the judges, and that crowd reaction and popularity affects perception.

You've got to blame Cosell for a lot of that. The guy had a remarkable propensity for talking up the fighter who wasn't winning. I remember watching him call Cooney vs. Holmes; while Holmes was kicking Cooney's ass in the later rounds, Cosell kept blabbering on about how powerful Cooney was. Here even while Hagler's outlanding Antuofermo 2-1, Cosell's exclaiming how the fight's totally turned around.

@@Rick356A I am most definitely not wrong, yes I exaggerated a bit with 12 rounds to 3, but I did that on purpose to emphasize this injustice, most observers then and through the years agreed with me that Hagler clearly won the fight and was robbed of the title by the draw, the fight was not close to even. And someone on KZitem telling me of being a judge for years doesn’t really tell me anything, because even if it is true, we have seen in countless occasions that so called “professional “ judges can give horrendous decisions that are roundly condemned by most others that saw the same fight.
