Katie, you should be a Professor of English literature in the most prestigious university possible, honestly, your enthusiasm and knowledge, and astute literary criticism and descriptions are so infectious. I have never yet had the pleasure of reading anything by Elizabeth Gaskell but you have convinced me that once I finish 'Shirley' by Charlotte Bronte, I will be looking to read one of Gaskell's novels. I have enjoyed Charles Dickens for many years, as well as Jane Austen. So writers such as Elizabeth Gaskell and Anne Bronte are definitely next on my list. For now, I want to continue savouring 'Shirley' which has started to really pick up the pace and introduce a sweeping, interesting variety of characters and situations, already, in the early chapters. I will continue to enjoy your vlogs and blog also. Thank you and keep up the excellent reviewing. Kieran.

Thank you, your comment made me thoroughly happy. I really hope you get into some Gaskell soon - if you like Shirley, Gaskell's North and South and Mary Barton may be good reads for you, as they deal with some similar themes.

Many thanks for your very learned, expert recommendations, Katie. I look forward to getting into Gaskell's work. I'm at the point in 'Shirley' where the eponymous character has just been introduced, together with Mrs Pryor (unfortunately the introduction to the Wordsworth Classics edition did contain the relevant spoilers as to that lady's identity, but I do like those scholarly introductions), and Shirley and Caroline are becoming friends, as Caroline battles terrible depression and unrequited love. Loving it.

Kieran O'Driscoll I agree with your comment. I think Katie would make a very good English literature professor. Love her enthusiasm and insightful analysis

Thanks for breaking down this book so eloquently and loved your commentary and thoughts. It does remind me a tad of Dickens in some ways with the deep pathos/social commentary.

:D I'll read it! I am shocked how the back of some editions tell the whole story. This tends to happen mostly to classics, as if no one would mind. The back of my Jane Eyre tells of THE end >:O

Totally. I was reading Middlemarch a few months ago, and the intro basically gave away every single ending of other novels by the author. It's like, come on!

This is a wonderful book. I am yet to read Sylvia's Lovers and Ruth, but this is my favourite Gaskell so far. The way she gets right into the soul of her characters is astonishing. Some of the scenes, particularly with Alice, moved me to tears. Thank you for your videos, Katie. I am reading Gaskell based on your recommendations, and I am so glad I am!

I read it and enjoyed it very much. I completed it in a day. It was so captivating, and disheartening at the same time. Couldnt put it down till i was done reading.

Yeah this sounds very different from Cranford in pace! The deeper we get into two weeks of Gaskell the more I can feel North and South just starting at me from my TBR shelf haha

I just finished May Barton recently and it blew me away! It was my first Gaskell. I completely agree with all your points about what makes tis book so great! I had a similar journey as you. I finished the first act in about 7-8 days and after the plot twist I just inhaled it in two days! I would also add that I admire how the book explored mental illness and taught us to take mental illness seriously to a point that it becomes a key plot point. That's quite rare for Victorian literature (obviously, you would know better as you are much more well read than I am in the genre!). I was wondering what Gaskell novel I should tackle next. Any recommendations? :)

Wow, you totally saved me being spoiled because I have that edition but just happened to not read it. In general I don't really feel the need for synopses in Victorian novels since I know that if it's Victorian I'm interested 😂 This sounds so interesting! I can't wait to get to it!

Do not read the back! But seriously, enjoy it - I really hope you like it :) I'm the same - I don't need to know the plot, if it was written in the Victorian period, I'm there!

I'm reading this right now on your earlier Victorian novels video recommendation. I am loving her writing but the beginning of this is quite bleak! Lots of poverty and illness, even death. I was expecting more of a straight love story but as you say, lots of exploration of class here and so there's much more to this work. I've not got to the turning point of the plot yet but I notice that the further into it I get, it really becomes more of a pageturner. Thanks for a great rec! I'm determined to read every Gaskell and every Hardy and most every Dickens too. Really love when you spotlight an author. Any idea who you may feature next?

I'm glad you're enjoying it and hope you continue to do so :) I really enjoy doing these author weeks, but I'm not sure who I'll do next as there aren't many more authors I've read everything by. I'd love to do one of Anthony Trollope one day but he wrote so many and I'm barely a quarter of the way through is work!

I decided on this for the two books of Gaskell I have, mainly of this video ;P I guess N&S must got back in the queue! My edition has no chapter titles, I guess this was done in purpose not to spoil the plot? I got a very strong Hardy vibe from the opening pages, would you say the same? Meanwhile, I finally finished Martin Chuzzlewit after a whole year of starting it! xP I was quite disappointed with it :/ but there were some very strong points to it! Just started D&S, seems promising enough and hoping to love it as much as you did!!

I hope you're enjoying it! I didn't get much of a Hardy feel, but I guess being in a city stops the Hardy feeling for me. For me, Dombey and Son is so much stronger with Martin Chuzzlewit, so I hope you like it.

I am enjoying MB! Thanks! Guess I'm super weird cause I'm loving all the Victorian misery of poverty and destitution o.o Such a departure from saccharine 'Cranford' (which I will obey your order and reread probably soon) Putting aside N&S as a Christmas read C: I'm seriously considering doing a BookTube review of Martin Chuzzlewit! I think watching your vids for so longs has rubbed onto me :^) And D&S is unconventional Dickens, the plot starts from Chapter 1 instead of page 200! Read 1st instalment of it and I'm greatly excited; may even beat Grt Expect. for #1 Dickens spot for me. Back to catching up with OMF! Book 3 is intense, I must have read 3 instalments in a row today D: !

I don't think it's easier or harder than other Gaskell books - I'd read a few pages (you can find it online here www.gutenberg.org/files/2153/2153-h/2153-h.htm), and see what you think.
