Refreshingly Cynical Since 1996. And to be fair to Travers, the woman was notoriously difficult to deal with, it took her years to soften to the film and to even allow for a stage musical to even be concived of. She would've been dissatisfied that they still used the Sherman Brothers score even if the stage production is closer to the books
@darkside9020
9 жыл бұрын
Honestly I'm mostly playing devil's advocate at this point, but to be fair she is an artist, and she could have not sold them the movie rights at all, and considering how bad some adaptations turned out to be, maybe she was right to be a little restrictive
@ScreamingBottle
9 жыл бұрын
It took Walt Disney years of cajoloing just to get the film rights to begin with... and he was an artist as well, but he also had to get butts in seats. And I'm certain that no matter the studio producing, they'd have made changes just as much as Disney did. The only way it would have happened as Travers wanted would be if she'd gone and done it herself.

Broadway dumbed down for people who have $500 to spend on tickets for their kids. I hate the Disneyfication of Broadway.
@rbsadler
9 жыл бұрын
...Or maybe some people want to introduce their children to musical theatre at a young age without having to explain the plot of Miss Saigon to a 7-year-old? Plus, $500 is nowhere near the average price of a ticket nowadays. In New York it's anywhere from $100-$200 if you don't mind sitting in the balcony. Where I live you can get an almost front-row seat for under $100 to national touring shows like Kinky Boots and Book of Mormon. The repertory theatres in other cities also provide fantastic opportunities to see high-quality musicals at lower prices. And if you don't like "Disneyfication" there are PLENTY of musicals that have serious, serious themes. Not every single musical is going to fit your personal tastes, so you might as well just get over it.
@loveandwar007

@therealameliabedelia7821

Jordan Conley Are you implying that anything from the "Golden Age" of Broadway wasn't the same way? While many shows have underlying themes that go far deeper, I'd hardly call The Sound of Music, Oklahoma or My Fair Lady gritty. There aren't many musicals pre-1970 that I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing a child to. What exactly do you feel is the type of show worthy of The Great White Way? That being said, I saw Mary Poppins on Broadway twice and it was beautiful. Once while it still had Temper, Temper in it and, even in my mid-20s, that song was terrifying. There was nothing "dumb" about it.
@jordanconley3793
9 жыл бұрын
My comment went to originality more than grittiness. It costs a fortune to mount a BW musical. Tourists are more likely to pay for shows they have "heard of", thus we have the entire Disney library. "Frozen" will show up next year. And the next Sondheim or Rodgers will starve. Thank you for supporting the theater!
@redique
8 жыл бұрын
+Jordan Conley Is that why wicked, book of mormon and hamilton are the most famous broadway musicals at the moment and have been since they opened because people have "heard of" their story before. No, they are just incredible, just as is every Disney musical that has appeared on broadway, with exceptions off little mermaid and tarzan, since they were terrible renditions of popular movies, and just so you know those 2 shows didnt even run for over a year, due to what, OOOOOOOHHHHH lack of people going to see. Seriously even tourists go see musicals that they havent seen a movie off before. I live far away in new york and probably would consider myself a tourist, and last time I went to new york I saw If/Then and A Gentlemans Guide to Love and Murder, why? because I heard they were good and they really were. I did also see alladin, BUT only because I had to see James Monroe Iglehart in the role of the Genie and who knows how long he will be in the role, if it wasnt for him would honestly have gone to see something else. Also the "entire disney library", you know Disney has 55 animated movies and who the hell knows how many live action ones. The Disney broadway musicals are Beauty and Beast, Lion King, Tarzan, Mary Poppins, Little Mermaid, Newsies, Aladdin and now Frozen. Hardly what I would call an "entire library". Also Beauty and the beast didnt run 13 years and Lion King has been running for almost 20 years just because tourists flock to see it, no because even locals flock to them because they are some of the best musicals that have ever been made. Also I really dont get what is the problem for a show to be for "tourists" whats the problem, they are still watching a broadway musical, it could very well be a gateway to more of the classic and "non touristy" musicals. My love of Disney made me discover the disney broadway musicals and then lead me to many many other things, and such my top 10 favorite musicals of all time include wicked, company, billy elliot, phantom of the opera, hamilton, into the woods, book of mormon, chicago, mary poppins, and sweeney todd, and a lot of that is not the "touristy" musical, and if you noticed, 3 of sondheim.
