I just love the difference between Julie Andrews and the rest of the women there. She is so delicate and timeless, nothing too pompous, her hair is stylish and modest at the same time, same for her dress. As opposed to the rest of the women, all sparkling dresses and big hair. Truly a lady, truly a queen.

She was still in hair and makeup for the "Sound of Music' shoot. She literally left the soundstage and the SOM set, went to her dressing room and changed into an evening gown, and was whisked by waiting Disney limo from 2Oth Century-fox into Hollywood for the premiere.

Sorry, that is not true. Her last shooting day on TSOM was in early August 1964. This premiere was on August 27th. She was on a brief respite after filming POPPINS, THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY and TSOM in a row. She would next appear in what became an Emmy-nominated guest performance on THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW.

I was working at the Chinese Theater as an usher in 1964, and worked the night of the premier. Two weeks before the premier, the Chinese was playing Disney's Fantasia. At about 9 P M, on a weeknight, Mr. Disney, went to the box office, bought a $2 ticket, and gave me the ticket to tear. I had never before seen him in person, and I was excited, and enthusiastically said "Good evening, Mr. Disney! " Walt didn't like kiss asses, so his reply was a slightly annoyed "Humph". There were just a few people in the audience, and nobody seemed to notice him. I only saw him enter and leave, but he stayed not longer than 20 minutes, probably to check out the interior, as the Chinese had been beautifully remodeled and updated in the mid 1950's, and had the then state of the art screen, largest in the world, and full stereo sound, and the best projectors and projectionists. On the night of the premier, after the audience had taken their seats, Mr. Disney went to the podium to the left of the screen, and said "We're very proud of this. I hope you like our little picture." Then he thanked Technicolor for donating the cost of the premier (it was a charity fundraiser), and said he had used Technicolor exclusively since his first color short, "Flowers and Trees", yet never had more than a handshake contract to use them. The after show party was held in a huge white tent in the parking lot next door. The tent was decorated with props from the movie, including the carousel used in the animated segment of the film. The movie's chimney sweeps, in full costume and smudgy makeup, danced to "Chim-chim-chiree". Mr. Disney was drinking champagne, and spoke to whoever came up to him. The foregoing is from my memory, so I apologize in advance if I've missed some detail. By odd coincidence, I got to know Tom Hanks, who masterfully plays Mr. Disney in the Mary Poppins biopic, "Saving Mr. Banks", by way of his "Bosom Buddies" co-star, Peter Scolari. Peter was a friend and customer of my BMW car repair shop.

After the film was over Mrs. Travers went up to Walt and said "We've got a lot more work to do." She had several ideas on how to "improve" the film, including having some scenes cut entirely. Walt replied "Pamela. The ship has sailed." and he walked away. It was the last time they ever spoke or saw each other.

@NWR1991

What about the flashbacks? Sure the movie isn't highly accurate of course, in the early 60's scenes, but there are flashbacks of P.L Travers' childhood in Australia.
@NekoSamaIru
10 жыл бұрын
I meant the author's child. She separated twin boys by adopting one of them. She loved the adopted son. When the son turned 17 or 18, he was in a bar and another boy who looked just like him approached him. He told him they were twins and were separated at birth and he tried to find him everywhere. The boy was deeply hurt and he never forgave P.L. Travers. Though they started talking, their relation was never the same. And the movie also doesn't say anything about how the author felt when people thought Mary Poppins belonged to Disney and hardly anyone knew her. (Well, The movie did fix it though). And it also didn't mention P.L. Travers going to Walt and saying "I like the movie but you have to get rid of the cartoons!" And Walt said it cannot be done now. I do understand why Disney wouldn't mention all these things. I mean - it just wouldn't go with the plot! But the movie is great! ~Sorry for the loooong reply!! And sorry for spelling long as loooong and making it longer!

It’s fascinating watching this knowing the time line of Hollywood history. With comments such as “in the days of Louis B Mayer”. It’s an indication that the ‘golden’ age of Hollywood had already started to come to an end as early as mid 60s. Beautiful treasure.

Well, It was,Manuel. It was made in 1964! Julie got an oscar for best actress 1964, but ceremony was in april 1965. The sound of music was nr. 2 and runned in cinema for over 3 years! Mary Poppins runned for almost 18 months. Can you imagine! Dr.Zhivago runned for 2 years. In Those days a release period took It s time. In my homecountry the .netherlands the .sound of music was released earlier than Mary Poppins, I don’t know why.

Manuel Orozco that movie was made in 1997, I saw It in februari 1998. More than the half of the movies released in a year, we see the year after. Even in these fast times. When there wasn’t a lockdown, we would have seen a lot of movies made in 2019. some Oscarwinners of 2019 (the ceremony was in februari this year) are still not released in Holland because of the lockdown. That ‘s tragic!

@@madeleinemcgregor2855 there are many reasons why Walt was so popular back then: 1. He made people’s dreams come true 2. He had a moustache, and moustaches are very manly and masculine 3. Disneyland was the happiest place on Earth when Walt was alive 4. Walt was a dreamer, a visionary and a hard worker. 5. Walt was a nice man in public. He wasn’t rude to his fans like Justin Beiber or Elon Musk. Walt always preserved his family friendly image/ego. 6. He made fun and silly cartoons 7. Mickey Mouse was a ver popular character back then
